Compared to what? If you look at the labor involved, 'taint such a bad deal, just like anything hand made.

Ernest Czuka is such a nice person. Just registered on the website. Below, my bicycle, made by Ernest ("Nénesse" in French) just before PBP 1999

I visited Alex Singer last September and met MR. Cuska, Alex Singer (grandson with same name), and Olivier who is the current frame builder. Olivier just won the European "world's Best Bike", sort of like our North American Handbuilt Bike Show award winner. I have seen some spectacular custom bikes like Bruce Gordon and Columbine, but the Alex Singer bikes in the flesh are in a different league. Pictures do NOT do them justice. The bikes are Ces't Magnifique and unlike any others I have seen. The frame work is excellent, but not in the jewelry sort of way like American frame builders. There is some quality of completeness about the Alex Singer bikes where the whole of the bike is much greater than its parts. These were the best bikes I have ever seen anywhere, period. I imagine the Rene Herse bikes were/are just as nice, but I have only seen one of those, and it was thirty years old. The effect of walking into a shop and seeing a dozen new bikes like this is unparalleled. I added up the cost of building a nice Columbine touring bike and it came to over $12,000 dollars, so a $5800 Euro camping bike, with its custom racks, lights, and designed for the task French drivetrain parts seems like a good price. I was much more impessed with Alex Singer's bikes than I was with Notre Dame! As an added plus, everybody was very friendly and warm. Someday this will be a major tourist site!
