Why do I seem to always be in possession of items which might raise questions from TSA?
Two items in question, both of which I'd like to take with me during my return flight home from college:
Corsair survivor flash drive --- all aluminum case, looks like a vile that might contain a virus or WMD?
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Flash-Survivor-Drive-CMFUSBSRVR-8GB/dp/B000WJTENI
And a 40oz stainless steel water bottle w/stainless cap.
My biggest concern is the water bottle. It will be empty, but is this something that might cause concern and possibly get confiscated?
I wouldn't be worried about the flash drive. Can't you just check the water bottle?

Check your luggage. Pack the bottle inside your checked bag and leave it uncapped.
I know I'd sure feel safer if an empty bottle was taken from you.
Yay security theatre.

Actually, I'll have nothing except carry on.
This article is timely, as well as awesome (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200811/airport-security).
Also, this (http://wondermark.com/220/).

Check their web site very thoroughly and make sure it doesn't violate any of their rules. If it does, you're better off mailing it home via Express mail.

Oh crap, I hope they will not try to take my binder away from me. :(
I have a 2" zippered binder of capitalist doom that goes everywhere with me. I have a bunch of free movie tickets, several hundred worth of gift cards, and a ton of coupons in there. It has literally saved me thousands of dollars and I am very fond of it.

The empty bottle will be fine. I had a backpack full of empty water bottles coming home from Vegas and not a word from them.

lol!
Please tell me you are joking, especially about the flash drive.
If you are worried, just send it home.
I've gone through security with my bike lights, home-built electronic boards, and all kinds of stuff that looks menacing and evil, and I've never even gotten a second look from TSA people. I also have a lot of credentials that would mark me as "evil" in their database (including a Pilot's license)...

You won't have to worry about the water bottle or the flash drive so long as the bottle is empty. I bring various tools with me often and I've gotten through with things before that could be used for mass destruction. Like a lighter when they were banned.

And to add, there are four "S"'s printed on the bottom of you're boarding pass if you were "randomly selected" for additional screening. It kinda takes the random out of it when they tell you right on the ticket that you are going to get searched.

I got two sets of highly dangerous knitting needles through security earlier this month. Mind you the woman at the x-ray machine did spend a long, long time peering at the image on the screen before deciding that I could probably do more harm with a ballpoint pen than with a set of circular knitting needles.
Then I discovered that I left the pattern at home, so I could only knit a couple of inches of sweater before calling it a day.
You can actually carry on a window breaker, empty plastic water bottle, aluminum flash light with assault head and aluminum flash drive.
no one stopped me :p
it just can't be too pointy.

How does that work for the knitting needles then? Definitely pointy.
Heh, a 3 D-Cell Maglight is a much more dangerous weapon than a lot of items on the ban list.
knitting needles don't have enough girth at the grip for a reliable stabbing device

If Clive Owen can kill someone with a carrot in some particularly lousy movie, James Bond could certainly kill someone with knitting needles. These were circular needles. I always wondered if the plastic could make a nice garotte, if you were that way inclined.

I went through security in Miami a couple of years ago.
I had come from work and discovered I still had a box cutter in my pocket after I had cleared security.
I managed to set off the metal detector at Toronto Pearson with... get this... the button on my pants.
Vancouver and Narita didn't have this issue.

Don't tell me - they confiscated your button and your pants fell down.

I went thru security at a major airport with not one but 4 12 gauge shot gun shells in my jacket pocket:innocent: And I am not sure they weren't in there on the last couple of trips. Best one by far was when they tried to take my wife's can opener away from her...she is a Senior Flight Attendant and was in uniform. She has been carrying it for several year. The TSA clown took out of her bag saying it wasn't allowed. She picked back up, stuck it back in the bag and told them it wasn't on THE LIST and walked off. TSA is nothing but window dressing. I have driven into the multi level pickup area in a large pickup with enough LP, Diesel and Gasoline on board to cause major mayhem.

They just don't make airplanes with the room that they used to have anymore.

90% of the time I travel I end up getting hand checked at the gate as I'm boarding.
I've started to wonder if I'm being profiled by some "anti-profiling" standard-
"Hey! lets pick the short, nondescript white girl with blue eyes. Then we're not racial profiling."
I tried to take a 747 onboard a 767 once. They *****ed at me about it "not fitting," which is total BS, since the 747 is smaller than the 767. As I'm sitting there arguing with the mental midgets, some dude walks right by with his DC-10, no questions asked. Racists.
