Well....I guess a 'Hi All!' is in place given that this is my first post in this place. I ended up on these forums seeking some advice on cycling in the US as I recently migrated here from the Netherlands.

Anyway, on with the post.

For a long time now I have been playing with the notion of having my Helix pierced (in my case, somewhere in the 'folded back' rim along the edge of your ear). For me, the main reasons are
1) a style experiment, I like the notion, I like the looks and if I don't like it, the scar is hardly visible (the insurance policy)
2) I just came out of a nasty phase of my life, luckily very much on top (more luck than wisdom), and want a reminder of that.
3) Most of the people I talked with think it would look good on me.. (that was the final push...other people agree with my opinion)

However, for me the delay was in the fact that I was unsure of what other people would think. Of course, you can say 'screw them!' but we all need other people, and that first impression does matter. Also, I work as a scientist at the US dept. of agriculture, so this is not the place where everybody has piercings and tattoos.

Recently I decided to just go for it, consequences be damned, and get it done. Furthermore, I decided that, in keeping with my image, I'd go for something simple, not flashy at all so hopefully 80% of the people won't even notice when talking to me. If you want to form your own opinion on this, I added a picture of me....I needed a shave, wasn't having too much fun (clubbing in the US sucks...we're sorry ;) ) and I lean to the right becaue I was standing next to a very small girl.. :p

What I'd like to know i whether anybody else has some experiences with this? Bad reactions? Employers going nuts?

Also, any advice on the aftercare from people who had it done before?

Cheers,

Jewan

PS. Yes, I do ride a fixed gear bike, but no, that has nothing to do with it ;)

Hi! I guess the first question I'd ask is why did you leave cycling heaven for the US? Why?!?!?!?:p

I think piercings are hot...on other people. I freak out at the notion of getting them myself, as I don't like sharp, pointy objects stuck in my body. I don't think employers will freak out much unless you have an uber-uptight boss.

I've had numerous facial piercings. I currently have an 8 gauge loop in my right ear and a 0 gauge tunnel in my left. I was teaching with tunnels in both ears. I got weird looks, but I would usually just engage the people I was talking to, show them that I'm not just some punk kid, and things would be fine. If you look different, it takes a little more effort to win people over, but most people can see past the bs.

Yes I did! But a little ear piercing won't hurt his handsomeness, and will possibly add a little bit of bad boy charm to it. :p

The vast majority of employers in the US won't care if you have an ear piercing of any sort, at least that's been my observation.

I keep my decorations below deck, outside of the general public viewing, just for safety.

they don't always go away. I had an industrial done years ago I had to remove it because of work. but it took over a year to really heal and even now after at least 5 years the holes still hurt in the cold or when I am tired.

I have a septum and 1" lobes. I love my stretched ears a lot but I'll have to shrink them back down to 1/2" or even 000 to get a job this summer.

I used to have snakebites but I took them out overnight once, months after getting them done, and they closed up very quickly! :( But I'll probably get them done again in the Spring.

I used to wear a bunch of earrings and I had 0ga plugs in one set of holes. I had to take them all out for a stuffy corporate science gig, and I just never put anything back in.

The Girl used to wear 2 rings at the corner of her mouth, two in her eyebrow, and a labret. After her last round of surgeries (multiple in just a couple months) she got tired of having to take all her jewelry out, so she hasn't put anything back in.

Hi Jewan!

I only have the standard single hole in each ear, but I know a lot of people who have various ear piercings and I don't see any adverse reactions from the public. I work in a place where my customers are quite a mixed lot, and various piercings are quite common.

As long as it doesn't interfere with your work duties, I don't see why anyone would care.

It's not permanent. Do it. If you are unhappy, undo it. And in the future, please show fewer pictures of yourself and more of the girl you are next to.

Ha, there's a reason why I cut her out of the picture...you'd all be looking at her and forgetting what the question was.

Well, I have more or less decided to do it and furthermore not ask my employer about it. The reasoning is that 1) I asked about the dress code in the lab before I got here (they didn't know what I'd look like at that point) and the never told me anything specific. 2) They are pretty relaxed so my bet is that if I just show up with one and they give me any problems, I can just tell them that I'll take it out as soon as it is safe to do so (a few months, I hear).

Also, why did I leave the Netherlands? Well....I work in one of the top labs in my field now...the other top lab is next door (NASA Goddard, that is), the pay is quite good, the research interesting and how often do you get the chance to move to another country anyway (in my career...probably too often, but heck, this is my first time)?

You see...this attitude only lasts until you find out I am a passionate (geo-) statistician ;) I have found that being able to do Harmonic analysis is a poor substitute for being able to make some Harmonics yourself :p

Ah...I'll post some pics of the results as soon as they are in :P

Aaaaah, I totally understand. I'd move to snowy Canada in a heartbeat if by some miracle Robert Zatorre or Isabelle Peretz (two of THE people in music psych) would take me into their lab.
