Hey, isn't this where blastradius wants to go on Friday?

I saw this guy on Russian Ridge (near Page Mill Road and Skyline, above Palo Alto) on Tuesday. Is this one of you?

You have very good eyes.

Ah, nice views!

And did you have binoculars to see that he had no derailleur? Even when I squinted I didn't see that. No wonder I'm not an inspector.

Big enough monitor to be able to make out the pixels of the rear hub and the lack of anything dangling from it, is all. :)

In the closeup picture, you can see that he only has one chain ring as well. However, he does have brake levers for some reason.

That would be pretty standard for a single-speed cyclocross bike. Can't be sure those are cantilevers though and it looks like snow is building up on the rear brake.

Also you can see he's wearing short tights... mid-calf. I bet that was a really fun ride for him.

Is anyone expecting black ice on the higher peak areas like OLH/Skyline or 84/Skyline in this temperature?

Anytime temperatures get below freezing at night, there is a risk of black ice on the roads the next morning. You even have to be careful on I-280. Once the sun comes out, the risk decreases, though shaded roads will warm up more slowly.

I did something similar with my old Trek 660:

Works great on a dry course. Not so great in mud. Probably not in snow either.

Possibly, but definitely not on the front of the fork.

Yes. The county was out sanding down Kings and 35 S to 84 this morning. I thanked them as I rode by. The intersection at 35 & 84 was particularly icy.

Hmmm....alright, no riding up to OLH/Skyline on Saturday morning then. Dang it, more running.

Hmmm ... I wonder if we'll run into the same problem with Sierra Road?

I just got back from riding up Moody and Page Mill to the Open Space parking lot. Not much snow left, mostly bits by the side of the road. There were larger patches of it to the left while descending the steep hump.

Upon closer inspection, it's almost definitely a caliper, at least in front. There's faint impression of what appears to be a cable housing.

There kind of appears to be a cantilever brake stop on the seatstays, but I think that's just a shadow on the snow behind.

I was riding around Sunol and Calaveras on Weds. - a surprising amount of snow on all those foothills south of the reservoir. Nothing on any of the roads we were on in mid-afternoon though. We didn't venture up either Felter or Sierra, so I can't say how it was further up.
