Last night, 2:00 am I rode a single bike alongside my son and future daughter-in-law on our tandem. 20 km city ride from San Isidro to Palermo in Buenos Aires, coming back from an asado (barbecue) at a friend's house. They are here for a visit, they have maybe 100 km as a tandem team so far, and will marry in Barcelona in july 09.

This was not the Everest Challenge, nor a century, but to see my son and his future wife working in a team was one of those little pleasures that life delivers every now and then.

Only problem was a driver who ran a red light (not unusual in late night Buenos Aires). I was able to swerve out of his way, but my son on the tandem went ahead across the path of the car, who had seen me and stopped in the middle of the intersection. Could have been a mess but nothing happened, my son judged correctly that the car had stopped and with less maneuver than me on a single decided not to attempt a hard brake or a steep swerve, and cleared the car with margin. Stoker sure got a fright, and they are still talking over their mutual reactions and recriminations. Need to talk to them both regarding pilot-stoker relations, points which will be useful in husband-wife relations as well.

Thanks for sharing. My lungs filled and my HR went up just thinking about an early morning ride....

Best of luck to you and your kids!
