i've had the wheels (and bike) for about 6 months. after about 200 miles, the front wheel needed to be trued. now, after about another 300 miles, it looks like it needs it again. i have the front brake open as far as it goes and there is still minor brake pad rub. i never really hit potholes, or unreasonably bad terrian.
anyway experience this problem with these wheels? they are Shimano WH-R540's (16 spokes). i wonder if i should just upgrade?

I am having a b**** of a time with the back wheel. There was one spoke that kept coming loose, it finally broke. Then today I broke the spoke next to it. I am seriously starting to shop around for a new set of wheels. I haven't had any problems with the front wheel but who's to say I won't. I'm looking to upgrade to a not only lighter wheelset but also something more traditional in terms of spokes used and lacing. The two broken spokes I have now have been replaced by normal spokes which aren't the ideal way to deal with the problem but alas no one, and I mean NO ONE, has those shimano spokes. I say get rid of them, thats what I am going to try and do.

I got 'em :)
I think problems with the Shimano wheels are fairly rare. The only ones I have seen messed up have been crashed or run over.
That said, I love hand built wheels. A good wheel builder can make you a set of wheels that will meet your needs and last a long time. I have built every wheel I have in use, more than twenty, and have built hundreds for customers and I almost never see them back and I offer free life time truing.

Good to know someone actually has them I guess, too bad a couple thousand miles seperate us! :D I have talked to Dave Thomas of speed dream wheels, I might go with that option. I like the idea of having wheels built to suit me. I have had a few problems with this set of shimano wheels. I actually had to swap the front wheel due to a pair of spokes rubbing together all the time.
