Northern California - Los Vaqueros Time Trial Climb: Somebody Win This!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have ridden with at least a dozen NorCal Bikeforums climbers (not me mind you) who could and should own this thing.

Go get 'em NorCal!!

Los Vaqueros Hill Climb Time Trial (http://www.ccwater.com/losvaqueros/LVDamTrials.asp)

"The Los Vaqueros Dam Trials returns for a second run on Saturday, April 18, 2009.

It's a pretty simple event, race three miles to the top of the dam.

We release each bike, one at a time one minute apart.

It's a steady climb, with a really steep section at the end. Last year's winner, Jeff Samson, tripped the clock at 10:08, an average speed of nearly 18 miles per hour. Four riders finished in less than 11 minutes.

We're limited to 85 riders, and we'll have entries ready by mid-January."

If everything works out I plan on suffering through the Devil Mountain Double that day. I'll be thinking about this one when I reach Sierra road at mile 150. ;)

Me and Cowboy Curtis took 1 and 3 in the 45+ category last year.

I think there were only about 20 riders, almost everybody got a medal! Also... only one woman, on a beach cruiser. We gave the organizers some tips about getting better turnout... publicity last year pretty much consisted of a note on their internal bulletin board and word of mouth. Hopefully it'll be a lot bigger in 2009, it was definitely fun.

I did 11:10. I'd never been timed in anything, so it was interesting.
I wore my HRM and was red line the whole way. I thought I was going to die. I was breathing so hard at the end went I went past a course marshal they asked if I was OK. My throat hurt for two days.
But I'm going to give it another shot. Really. I'm trying to get some info on training for 55-year-old bike commuting non-athletes.

My goal this year is to break 11. I started my 2009 time trial weight loss program Monday. I'm thinking if I get my weight down to about 35 or 40 pounds I'll be fast enough.

Anyway, check the heart rate here.

Maybe some day this event will draw so many people that my 5th (3rd in old guys) overall finish last year will sound good, as long as no one knows how small the field was.

So I'm torn between "Hey! Everybody come! It's cool!" and "Stay home so I can place."

I really wish it was held a different day. Last year I was volunteering at the Devil Mountain Double. This year I plan to be riding it.

The guy who won last year is in my local club. I've never met him; but he did the full Ironman version of the half I did last year.

How many steps back to Kevin Bacon? :p
