The annual spring plowing of the Going to the Sun Road has begun. It won't be long before the road is completely clear and open for touring.

You can track the plowing progress at the following link. http://www.nps.gov/glac/whatsnew/gttsroad.htm

Is anyone planning on a tour of Glaceir National Park this year?

N7CZinMT, I hope to come through your neck of the woods sometime in July, but as it will be at the beginning of our trip, I don't see us going over the "Going to the Sun Road" at that point. If it is as steep as I remember from when my folks took my family over it by car back in the 80's, it was incredible, and way!!! up. Lots of overheating vehicles and smelly brakes. Maybe we'll try it on our way back, though.

I'll be there sometime from 6/25-7/12. http://www.bicycleadventureclub.org/html/rides/?action=ride&rideid=74. Yesterday, I rode repeats of 1/3 mile of 5-6% bunny hills for my beginning hill training regime. I cycled on a ride in Colorado last year called "Pedal to the Peaks" with 28,000 feet of climbing. I heard the Canadian Rockies were easier than the Colorado passes. Sure hope so, cause I added some (non-muscular) bulk over the winter.

Your right. It is pretty steep in places. But boy-oh-boy what an experience it would be by bike! I have never ridden it. It is on my list rides. If your going to get near Great Falls on your trip and have time, PM me and I'll give you my cell number. Would be happy to buy you a cup of coffee, or what have you. Perhaps a leasure ride down our scenic River's Edge Trail.

Wow, that looks like one cool ride! Thanks for the link. I know what you mean about the bulk. I spend a week every summer up around the park around mid July. It is about the only place you can escape the heat of summer. I hope you have a good time. Please post photos etc... of your tour. I'd like to extend the same offer to you if you get around Great Falls.

EDITED PER Dougmt's request to remove outdated information. At any rate the West entrance is almost completely clear of snow... Apgar mountain looks pretty beat up from last year's fire... Apgar itself is almost snow free... and the road up to Avalanche creek is pretty clear... wont be long until the road to the loop is completely clear... that goes fast.
Just mention Bike Forums and you drinks are on me :)
Doug

Hey Doug, It sounds like outashape may be coming through your neck-of-the-woods. If I ever get up that way, I'll be sure to stop in. Also, give me a shout if your ever down this way.

I don't think I will be doing the Going to the Sun this year. I have a couple of other self supported tours I plan on doing. Great Falls to Helena. Very scenic.

If any bike forums members are touring through Great Falls, Coleen and I would like to extend an invitation to our place. You can camp in our back yard and a home cooked meal I am sure would go down good.
