eBay seller comotioncycles has this DT Hugi 540 hubset listed for $175, shipping included:

This seems pretty inexpensive for a tandem hubset, does anyone know the situation with these? I'm guessing that there's nothing really wrong with them - Are they a discontinued item or are 48-spoke wheels just not very popular?

My wife just bought a set of Race Face 175 / 175 tandem cranks from a Co-Mo Ebay auction.

Brand new and arrived in that condition.

If these are something you desire and find the cost inline, I wouldn't hesitate.

The hubs are a good buy. Does CoMo offer 48 spoke tandem wheels? 48 spoked wheels seem to be phasing out.

CoMo seems to be a reputable place. I called them the other day to be sure the ebay user was the same as the company. They said they were just couple year old stock. If you look at the 540 on the DT page they look different, but I think it's just the stickers. I ordered a pair and plan to just skip a couple spoke holes on the hub to fit the rims I have on the way.

This thread reminds me that back in the day, I lived in Eugene and went to one of the "garage sales" CoMo used to throw when they were still in their old location downtown.

I bought a bunch of "new old stock" seven speed freewheels that I kept for years until I realized that I'd never use them, having transitioned to 8 speed. To my surprise, those freewheels sold on Ebay for much more than I paid for them.

I miss the old days when those guys were downtown and Dwan was still seen from time to time on club rides.

Yes I am serious. I'm a sub 300 pound team on a tandem, not a 500-600 pound team on a triplet. I think it's entirely reasonable to build up wheels with less than 48 spokes each. I do occasional work for Hed and as a result got a good deal on some aluminum rims which the guys I know at Hed said will hold up just fine for my application. The rims are not 48 hole rims ergo I will be skipping some of the holes on the hub. Interestingly, this will not make the world (or the hub flanges) explode and I'm not really sure what you find so incredulous.

jccaclimber, lighten up just a bit. Probably a bit too much mulled wine for cornucopia72 and the fact that he comes from a triplet. If he were to suggest a wheel other than 48 spoke for his application I am certain all the curmudgeons on this forum would be skeptical too.

Sorry, with my stoker having a bad ankle I must have been spending too much time in the roadie forum, no offense intended. I've been getting a lot of grief lately locally for the (in my mind sound) decision to go pairing mismatched hub/rims. It seems to be a perfectly reasonable (although perhaps esthetically questionable) solution.

No problem, If you look at some of my past posts in Tandem, you will see that I do not always go right down the middle of the road either. Some of my suggestions or better, attempts at thinking outside the box have met with some criticism also. But in the long run its not what people on here think, its your opinion and experiences that matter most. So make the appropriate choices for yourself and to hell with all of us here!!!!
