"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - 'cross training'

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If roller miles don't count, does snow shoveling count as lifting weights?
what else gives you a good workout or leads to over training that folks don't take into
account when looking at their training? I have a buddy who has a very physical construction
type job in the entertainment industry. Up and down ladders all day long.

I'm always cross when I'm training.
4:05AM? You know what's scary? You weren't posting that in a drunken stupor as the bars closed. Oh, no. That would be friggin normal. You had already gotten UP for the day. Bike weenies are just off the hinges.

I have assigned training stress scores to watching football. What are these snow shovels you speak of?

I'm gonna say that snow shoveling counts. Scraping ice even more so. Chopping wood definitely.
I do a lot of manual stock preparation with handplanes in my shop and that can get very aerobic (except mostly upper body only).

You'd think so wouldn't you. It kind of ranks up there with taking a poop as far as "exercise" is concerned.

Then you are doing it wrong. I was thinking the other night of what it would be like to have a heart rate monitor on for that. The way I look at it, 1h45 and a bucketload of sweat? That HAS to count for something.

I think construction counts. Any labor intensive job creates bodily stress and should "count." but if you need something that contributes to an equivalent 'on the bike' stress, unless it is an aerobic HR raising activity, probably not so much unless you are going for the "weights" equivalent.
Things that I count? Playing volleyball, lifting weights, being on the slopes.

'Being on the slopes'? I can hammer a hill all day long (and I can hammer on skis, trust me) and it's a workout of sorts, but not particularly aerobic, and not particularly related to cycling. We should go skiing sometime Dr. W, just so I can pwn you @ some sport.
Watch, the dude turns out to be an alternate on the friggin US Ski Team.
