Whoa! Has anyone tried to convert an old road bike into a fixed gear before? Pics or I wouldn't believe it...

in all seriousness, if the frame is sound you can make it a fixed gear. and it'll be fine. But building from scratch is going to cost you more than a new complete bike, usually.

I was just kidding with that statement. You should be able to convert it fine. You may have some issues with the chain line, but that's a bridge you'll have to jump off when you reach it. Do some searches on these forums for conversion, and you'll come up with heeps of information. You may also want to check out Sheldon Brown (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html).

1) what kind of dropouts does he have? not sure? then why are you saying "convert it fine"?
2) what is the rear spacing?
3) any idea what sort of bottom bracket he's got? what does he do if it's a one piece?

please refrain from giving advice about things you don't really understand yourself.

OP, post a pic of your bike. without knowing what you're working with, it's impossible to determine what you can do to it.
Once you know what's going on, you can begin sorting out your options.

Sorry for trying to help. I said he SHOULD be able to convert it fine. I didn't guarantee he was going to be able to convert it. Try reading what was originally posted before bashing someone. I'll stop posting since I apparently don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm not getting in any more BFSSFG arguments until after new years but it is a safe assumption that most frames prior to the mid to late 1980s used horizontal drops. Backed by Sheldon if you search.

It's not a big deal. Maybe I just wasn't clear in what I typed.
