"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Good puncture resistant tires?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've had it with the bontrager race x lites I currently have... They are great, but I swear I flat just about everytime out... Need some suggestions on tires and or tubes that will be a little more resistant to punctures. I'm not racing, so if they weigh more its not a big deal... being 20 miles away from home out in farmland and hoping your last patch holds sucks ;)

You can't beat the Specialized All Condtion Pro.. Just a word before you change tires, I had a new set of wheels where there were plastic rims strips, lots of flats.. Since putting velox tape on the rims no flats at all.. Just a possibility..

I've been having good luck with my Conti GP3000s. I've been using them for the last 3 years and the only time I flatted was when I let a set go far longer than they should have before replacing.

I second those specialized all condition pros. I have had very good luck with them. Only getting a flat twice in a couple thousand miles and those times were when the glass or whatever was big enough to actually shred the tire. Might want to look into some slime or tire sealant. I got some in my tires from supergo. They have allowed me to get home on a number of occassions.

I have them and got one flat in 1500 miles. I had glass and even metal burred in them with no flats. the flat was on the inside of the innertube. when I bought them I think I weighted about 250. now I am about 232. I just rotated them as the back was mroe worn. but these seem to work great. it sounds like you have another problem.
I just bought another paif for only 20.00 each.

I'll second that. The grand prix seems to be a good tire. A bit expensive but also reliable

I really like the Conti Grand Prix's it's a pretty light racing and training tire.

Try Michelin Axial Carbons or maybe just "Carbon" now. They are bomb proof training tires. I put 7,500 miles on the front and 3,000 miles on two rears without a single flat tire.

Maybe this is too obvious, but do you properly inflate your tires? Before I bought a decent pump and learned about the virtues of a hard tire, I punctured a lot. It turned out that road garbage 'sticks to' low-pressure tires, while it 'bounces off' hard tires. Now, I pump up my tires to the maximum advised pressure of 120 psi.
They are Continental Grand Prix, non-foldable, all black--great tire. But perhaps a bit too heavy for racing.

I also believe that stuff 'bounces off' hard tyres, but then someone confused me with the 'elastic band theory'. They say that a tyre, being rubber (obviously), will cut easier if it's tighter, just like an elastic band will.

I pump them to 120 (as the tire says) There is an awful lot of debris along the roads here though... We had our biggest snow storm in years, and they went overboard on the gravel... not to mention that whenever there is an auto accident, they just sweep the glass into the bike lane, and forget about it..
And I don't get a flat everytime out... but it was probably two out of my last five or six rides that I did...

I must say that I am dissapointed with my GP3000s. I have probably 900-1000 miles on my set, and the rear is starting to show serious wear...and I'm averaging about 200 miles between a flat. perhaps its just the crappy Maryland springtime roads, but it is kinda annoying. when I look at the tires, later, it is usually, like a sharp peice of something that is embedded in the tire. but it is still annoying. I will say, though, they ride really well, especially around 110-115 psi.

I agree with both points.
I have the Specialized Armadillos for my trainer now (took them off the bike for regular use). Ine bike is equiped with RaceX LIte (Lemond) and the other with Wpecialized Fack Jacket tires (I think they are the all condition).
I too had a problem with my Mavic wheels that had a plastic tape that some how got a burr on it and also didn't fully cover one of the spoke holes. The result - LOTS OF FLATS. The fix - Velox tape!!
Good luck...Bill
