So I got a new road bike a few days ago, and when I touched the chain, it was sorta "sticky". I just accepted it, and I thought maybe it was wax lube. I had never touched wax lube on a chain before, so I wouldn't know what it's supposed to feel like.

Anyway, I went for my first ride with it today, and now my chain is coated with little bits of road crap. What should I do? Should I just leave it like this, or should I degrease it, and relube it with my regular lube (Finish Line Dry Lube)? Since I dry lube, I'm used to slick metal chains, not sticky ones.

Brush the loose stuff off with a small brush and ride. That is the factory installed lube, it is probably the best your chain will ever see. It is based on one of the versions of Gleitmo and is installed at the factory under pressure. You'll probably get a good 5-600 miles before needing more oil on the chain depending on the weather conditions you ride in.

Wait a while and this thread will be full of all the old wives tails about cosmoline.................

Wax lube is very dry and feels literally like wax. If you are to use White Lightning, make sure to reapply quite often as it wears out fast, but do not overdo it as I have heard stories about WL going into the freehub and seizing the pawls up.

OP, I remember you, have you given up trying to roadify your mtb?
