what steel hardtails are available for this price range?

I know of the Jamis Dakota XC which is very nice... and a friend of a friend recently got one

There's also 3 models by Marin, and the Bianchi Denali. What else is available out there?

Soft front (no full-hard), Geared, and Steel

The Jamis, without question. If not the Jamis Dragon

Good mentions here. I would also recomend Jamis. Marin deserves attention as well.

yeah, i rode that Dakota XC... unbelievably beautiful look (small 631 tubing)... and unbelievably soft ride (felt like friends' SC Blur!)... a bit soft, tho, as it bobbed alot on pedaling

Marin's diamond tubing doesnt appeal to me...but i havent ridden it

If you are willing to go used, how about trying to find a GT Karokorum? I really like mine (not for sale), and everyone I spoke with who had one has had nothing but good things to say.
