Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Single to Fixed help!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi there. I just purchased a single speed bike today from a friend thinking it was a fixed gear. This bicycle is for a friend for Christmas; he wants a fixed gear. To be honest I know nothing about bikes or even how to start to convert it. Here are some pictures:

What I would like is some links to products I will need to do this. I have looked at the sheldon site but I honestly do not understand. If you can help me get this gift ready I will be extremely happy!
Heres a picture of the bike in full.

Thank you!

you can either get a new hub and get the wheel rebuilt, get a new rear wheel with fixed hub, or do what is called a "Suicide Hub" using loctite or jb-weld.
ps: why no brakes on a SS bike?
okay i think the new rear wheel would be easiest. if i do that i just put that on and everything will be kosher? sorry for the newbieness but bicycles aren't my thing. (:
and i know i was confused as to why no brakes either.

yep. new rear wheel + fixed cog and lockring and everything will be good. Make sure that the hub is a Fixed hub on the wheel. If not, then you will be in the same situation. Look for formula hub, they are probably the best performance/price for a hub being run on the street. Get a bike shop to install the cog/lockring if you dont know what you are doing though. You want your friend to be safe, right?:thumb:
good luck!
thanks man. any idea how much this will run me? i went to my local bike shop and they said they could do it for 90 bucks or so. is that reasonable?

for a new wheel, 90 isnt _bad_ not great either. Just for reference, a new, pretty good wheelset can be had for ~150 from ebay. so that is $75. Ask what rim/hub they are using. Maybe you can get a different combo for cheaper.
okay. great man thanks! glad i got some nice response without being flamed. (:

buy a back wheel that fits your bike and have a fixed gear on one side and a bmx freewheel on the other. might want to invest in some brakes as well

If the bike shop quoted you $90 for a fixed gear conversion, it is def. worth it. A decent rear wheel with a fixed hub will cost you about that same price, and most will not include the cog/lock ring.

With a cog and lockring, you are looking at around $130.
