Bicycle Mechanics - Where to break a Shimano 10 Speed chain

Hi guys,

Doing a frame swap and down to the chain and BB. I know I have to break the chain off the old bike to put it on the new bike. I went to Park's web site to determine where I can find a "master" link but it confused me further. None of my rivets have "peen" lines on them as they describe.

Does it matter which rivet I break it on?

One pin will look different than the others, that's the one you don't want to pop out.

find a section with four or five links where the pins all look identical from both sides. you can push one of their pins out. If you wish for cleaning, you can put a whipperman connex 10spd link in it's place. A clean chain is a happy drive train.

"10 speed" narrow chain does not have a master link most of the time. there are exceptions out there im sure, but its mainly the wider 1/4" bmx or single speed style chain that run with a master link. just find a pin and use your chain tool to drive out the pin, being carefull not to drive it out to far so that you will be able to redrive the pin back in later.

That is quite incorrect. There's not a 9, 10 or 11 speed chain made that can be safely rejoined with the same pin that was pushed out, even of just one of the outer plates. Shimano chains use a special replacement pin and most others use a master link that requires not tools.

Shimano chains can use a master link, but it must be the correct width inside the outer plates. Shimano, KMC and I believe the newest Wipperman 10 speed chains have the same width requirement, while the Campy UN and SRAM 10 chains require a .1mm naroower inner width. The Forster Superlink is made in these two widths, the model 3 and model 4, respectively.

One combination to avoid is the Wipperman connex link marked 10S1, with a Shimano or KMC chain. The models marked 10 SPEED, should work fine.
