Books, Movies, Music & Entertainment - Movies about cycling

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am looking for some movies that have anything to do with cycling. I really don't know any.

The Bicycle Thief. The beginning of this one is pretty hardcore if you've ever had a bike ripped off. Just the anticipation of it getting ripped off is VERY suspenseful.
Triplets of Belleville. A killer animated feature length. I was lucky enough to see it in a theatre.

The animated The Triplets of Belleville (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286244/) has a great story… albeit unrealistic. It’s my all-time favorite cycling film. It’s set in the 1950s during the TdF and centers around a rider who’s not only obsessed with the sport but forms an unusually close relationship with his grandmother after losing his parents in WWII.
Of movies currently in theaters, The Reader (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0976051/) isn’t a cycling movie but it has several scenes where the couple in love (a teenage boy having a secret affair with a 30-something ex-Nazi, played by a very hot Kate Winslet) sneak off on a cycling tour of 1950s Germany.

More of a public service flic than a movie, but wildly entertaining nonetheless. Sort of explains why anyone who lived through the '60s is screwed up.

The 40 Year Old Virgin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405422/), directed by Judd Apatow and starring Steve Carell: I don’t recommend it – it’s a comedy that I didn’t find very funny but it is interesting in that the filmmakers used the different bikes that he (the title character) rode to show how he changed from a total nerd who had no hope with women to a family guy to marginally cool guy.
Another comedy where they use a bike to tell you something the character: the Coen brothers’ Burn After Reading (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887883/), which I highly recommend. Brad Pitt plays a personal trainer who’s a little light between the ears. He rides his bike around DC as he attempts to extort an ex-CIA guy ("Osbourne Cox" played by John Malkovich).

"2 Seconds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158446/)" is very bike oriented, about bike messengers. Actually a really good movie up until the very end.

I saw a little bit of "You, me and Dupree" yesterday and Owen Wilson's doing some Spinervals style video training in it. Looks really corny, but is on again in a half hour. I may just watch it...
The BBC made a 4 episode doc about this british guy!

Beijing Bicycle (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276501/)
It's like a Chinese version of the Bicycle Thief but with much more bicycle. Great movie.
not bad choices but you really need to watch
A Sunday in Hell (http://www.worldcycling.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HSTDHELL) and/or Stars and Watercarriers (http://www.worldcycling.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HSTDSTAR) for
some classic racing.
The Yellow Jersey is a novel about the Tour de France that was optioned by Dustin Hoffman who wanted to make the movie and star in it. He didn't make it happen. The cycling movie that almost was. You can still read the book. Early 1970's -- typical angst of the times, but still a good story with lots of Tour action.

I saw the Triplets of Belleville in the theater twice within the first three days it opened. That's how good it is. We bought the DVD on the day it was released.
I just watched it again when I needed some cheering up. Highly recommended. A couple of my friends call it the funniest movie they ever saw.
The animator painstakingly drew a bicycle wheel in rotation, with the crossed spokes correctly depicted. He said it was the hardest part of the movie to animate. There is also a lot of cycling stuff on the wallpaper in the boy's home. Lots and lots of stuff to notice the second and viewing.
It's a French/Canadian/Belgian collaboration. There's no dialogue, so there's no language barrier.

FWIW it's worth, AMERICAN FLYERS is in the $5 bin at Walmart. Well worth $5. Story is OK, bike riding footage is great.

I stumbled onto this movie by accident when a non-cycling friend loaned the DVD to me. Those are the finest movie-watching moments for me, when an unexpected gem is found.

Yours might be called 'Belleville Rendevous' same movie. Yes, it's a cartoon.
I saw it in a town in Kerry (Ireland)as part of a local festival. It was shown out-doors and was powered by volunteer cyclists from the audience generating electricity on four spinning bikes set up facing the screen. Very appropriate given the movie plot.
It was a touring show to promote energy saving when using electricity.
