Great Lakes - Repainting a Carbon Frame

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum, if not I apologize.
I have a 2001 Trek 5200 in dire need of a new paint job (besides getting tired of the USPS decals). Other than the manufacturer, does anyone know where one might go to have this done? Obviously I prefer somewhere local (Twin City area). Does anyone have an idea what this might cost? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
It will need to be wet paint instead of powder coating. The latter needs a conductive surface.
There are purists out there who claim only a bicycle painter can paink a bike, but it isn't rocket science an a car painter will do a good job. I mention this because you may not find a local bike painter but plenty of car painters.
If you use the search function and put "painter" or "painting" in the title, you will get plenty of hits on who paints bikes. It is pretty easy and cheap to ship a frame anywhere in the country.
As for cost, I would guess about $200 for a single color and more for a fancy job.
Sorry I can't give you a recommendation, I like patina.

Your best bet is to use the, "Search the Forums" option. I did this (in the Mechanics thread) and had several hits with advice. I would also suggest you limit the search time frame to 2 years. (I used "Painting carbon" as the search keywords)

Thanks for the info! I will use the search forums feature . . .
Wouldn't painting a carbon frame be similar to painting a Corvette? I know the two materials are a bit different but it would seem to me that if someone was equipped to paint a Corvette they would be able to paint a carbon frame . . .
