Bicycle Mechanics - Squeaky SPD Pedals

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hey guys, I have the pedals posted below, which I know are no great shakes, but they get me around. he only problem I have is that they squeak when my cleats are in certain positions in the pedal. Usually, when I move my foot laterally, the squeak will stop. However, sometimes, the squeaky position is the most comfortable. Anyone have any suggestions to help this problem?

I've got two sets of shoes with SPD cleats. I've experienced the same thing. In each case where this has happened to me it has been caused by the cleat being to close to one of the two extreme positions. Another way of saying it is that the best cleat position is for the front of the cleat to be in direct alignment with the center of the front retaining clip and the rear of the cleat to be centered on the back pedal retaining clip. This takes some trial and error. In your case, you've already identified the direction to rotate the cleat in order to reduce the squeaking. When you rotate your foot and thus reduce the squeak, make note of which way (clockwise, counter-clockwise) you turned it. At your workbench, loosen the allen screws that hold the cleat. Rotate the cleat in the opposite direction as you noted when you were on your bike looking down at the pedal from above. In my own experience I have found that the cleat is best when centered on an imaginary line drawn from the center of the shoe's heel to approximately the center of the toe next to the big toe. This is approximate but is a good starting point. Also, the forward and aft position is worth mentioning. I try to locate a spot that places the center of the ball of my foot directly over the pedal axle.
