Now that it is closed for good, now what? I know there were a few commuters who use it to get to Tampa from St. Pete and vice versa. No other bridge is bike friendly, but could you ride the Gandy across?

It can be done. There's quite a bit of grit, debris, and other junk, but the shoulder is fairly wide. I've only done it once on a weekend morning (very low traffic volume) and there's still quite a blow by when a truck passes.
Would not recommend it for anyone that's not got a significant amount of road riding experience.
