I don't seem to be able to tell one from the other. I have a shimano 105 triple fd bolted to what I now believe is a 1 3/8 oversize adapter. I think that this is supposed to be used with a braze-on fd. I mistakenly bought a 1 1/4 clamp on ultegra fd to replace it. I can't find any clamp-on's to fit my 1 3/8 seat tube. On close examination, it looks like the ultegra fd could be unbolted from its 1 1/4 clamp, and attached to the oversized clamp on my bike. Am I missing something? are both clamp-ons's and braze-on's really the same fd bolted to different brackets?

There are braze on der., they have only a curved stub to fit the mount brazed(or welded) to the frame. There are also clamps that will let you mount a braze on der. to a frame, they come 1 1/8, 1 1/4, 1 3/8. If it is a braze on der there will be one bolt threaded into a curved piece that is on the right side of the der. looking at it from the drive side. This bolt will point straight to the front of the bike.

I had the same problem too when I got my new frame.. My old 105 FD won't fit..
And so do all clamp-on ders at the LBS. So I was forced to order a braze-on mount and got a 105 braze-on F-der. I'll post pics later

excuse the dirt/dust and all.. just got back from my ride.. :)

clamp on
Thanks Dexmax. Was what I was afraid of- will have to return the clamp-on and echange it with a braze-on. Wonder if I can re-use the oversize clamp that is currently mounting my 105 fd?

Thanks Rev. Chuck. Just arranged exchange for braze-on with oversize clamp.

I kept all my parts.. never sold any component...

It came with my Deore XT group... that was 1990-91? (not sure anymore) :D

I think it looks good, and serves the purpose.. ;)
