Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Carrying a camera??

Ive noticed a lot of you post up with some awesome ride pics frequently. :thumb:
Im interested in taking some pics while on rides. I have a nice camera (SLR type) thats too big to carry, nor do I want to risk damaging it if I could bring it. I have a cellphone that takes OK pics, but you know how they operate.....you might get 1 or 2 good shots, the rest turn out like junk.:rolleyes:

Im thinking small single hand operational, inexpensive (<$100?).

What kind of camera are ya using? Do you carry a mini/tiny little tri-pod with you???

Sony cybershot 6.0 maybe $120 'ish before the memory card. No tripod,, jsut a steady hand while taking ride shots. Curbs, mailboxes, walls while doing self portraits!:p

For the $100, I'd probably go with a Lumix LZ8 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/545366-REG/Panasonic_DMC_LZ8K_Lumix_DMC_LZ8_Digital_Camera.html)

Not the slimmest camera out there, but awesome lens and takes AA batteries. I had a 2 mp Lumix that served me well for 6 years.

I've got a Canon PowerShot A620 that I take with me at times in my trunk bag. I think I paid $200 for it a couple of years ago when it was on closeout. There should be any number of little comparable cameras out there at similar or better prices now.

I've tried carrying a mini tripod, and it's not worth the effort. With this thing, I can still photograph well-lit night stuff handheld or by putting it on the pavement.

I delved into my archives to dig up a ride pic I took with my old Lumix LC33. I occasionally carry a tripod, but just handheld for this one.

I like the Canon PowerShot SD-series cameras. They take consistently better pictures than any other digital point-and-shoot that I've used. Consider getting a model that offers Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) technology. Don't know how it works in a point-and-shoot camera, but I've been very impressed with the 300/f4 IS lens that I used with my Canon SLRs.

I use a Kodak EasyShare 12 MP camera I bought this year. It has an image stableization feature I like, since my hands shake. I carry it in a bag around my neck, since I can't find a good handlebar bag for my 7.5 fx.

Kodack Easy Share C433. It's a couple of years old, but does a nice enough job.

I haven't carried my camera while riding cuz I don't have a bag large enough to carry one. Historian's idea of carrying it around my neck never occured to me.

I think I have a handlebar bag I can live with now, haven't mounted it yet though. I also have a trunk bag now, so that's a massive solution and should hold a camera no problem, lol.

Cover it with a plactic bag when raining.
Mounted on handle bars.
I have it set for a very large photo size.
Take pics as I ride, crop them when I get home.

I made a mount out of an old reflector bracket, a quarter inch bolt and a couple of nuts. Works great for a fairly light camera - Fuji Finepix A310. Took my first riding shots of my wifes butt yesterday.

I haven't carried my camera while riding cuz I don't have a bag large enough to carry one. Historian's idea of carrying it around my neck never occured to me.


Look for the camera bag here in the August tour 'victory' shot. Stop staring at my whistle :) :

I thought this was a cool take on the digicam.....looks like it would be good for outdoors stuff, it clips on like a carabeaner!
unfortunately I dont think the image quality is up to par like some of this pics seen here. Only $60 though. 5MP resolution.

Thanks. It was taken using a 12 MP Kodak EasyShare propped on the back of my trailer. Like my tour, I had no idea the photo would come out as well as it did. :)

Best Buy has some 5-7 megapixel (depending on brand) cameras for $60-80. They dont have all those wonderful features, but they do video and things like that. I plan on getting on for when I ride, and also to put on the front tow hook of my car for some cool videos :)

I carry my camera in the back pocket of my jersey. If the camera has image stabilization and you can set it to a high ISO speed, the effects of shake while riding will be reduced. Shoot with a wide angle and crop the image when you get home.

I would recommend spending some money and get a decent camera. I recently purchased the Canon A720 - the 4th in a long line of Canon hand held cameras and love it. One nice thing about a Camelbak, I can attached my camera case to the front strap and have my camera handy at all times.

10 wheels - I love the handlebar mounted camera idea... is there a concern about rought roads causes damage?

No concern. I have about 5,000 miles with railroad tracks, pot holes.

Paid $79 for the cames on Closes out at Radio Shack.
No worries about loosing it. I have it mounted with a turn buckle on a 1/4 bolt.
I can turn it sideways or remove it quickly for a hand held shot.

I keep a dust cover made from the end of a sock to protect it from the road grim.

BCIPam, I think you are correct, I should buy something decent, and those are some awesome shots!!!

Hopefully this weekend the sales papers will have some good deals going on. I dont want to spend a ton of money simply for the fact of how the camera will be used and the possibility of it getting damaged (itll go on MTB rides too!)

I recently purchased the Canon PowerShot A590 IS to replace my HP camera. Got some nice shots of Ovechkin *swoon* on the ice at both The Pond and Staples from my seats in the nosebleed sections.

And +1 on the waterfalls shot! That's a stunner!

Its called a Gorilla Pod and they have 2 sized, one for small cameras, and one for bigger SLR's.

Its bendable to any shape and with a small camera would work awesome for getting a group shot, or those cool shots like Mr. Beanz is known for posting! (survivorman style)

Looks Cool. Make sure it is Not too Tall and wobbles all the time, should you try it on your bars..

Just looked at it.
The lock ring will not hold very long while riding a bike.
