Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Nishiki Prestige?

A Nishiki prestige is up for sell at auction and I would like to know the approx value? It looks to be in good/fair condition and complete. Any help would be appreciated as I want to bid but don't want to pay too much. Thanks in advance for any help.

The Prestige model was typically one of Nishiki's nicer bikes in the upper half of the line-up. The 1980s models that I'm familiar with were made from Tange double butted chromoly steel. Mid 1980s models had Tange 2 tubing. It's a very respectable model with very nice components.
To provide value, we'll need more information, like the year or a pic would help.

I hope you snapped it up. It was only at $6.00 when I looked earlier today. I thought about calling a friend that lives in Nebraska, but decided that the logistics would be too tough and that would seem like poaching.

It went for $31.78. I stopped in to the local warehouse and had a look at it. It was quite small at 56 cm. I ride a 60 cm and have long arms. The tires were done, the front wheel was out of true, the cables were rusty, the paint was badly scratched and the front derailer was locked up. I decided to pass on bidding and spent the day slumming it at the local thrift shops. Didn't find any bikes worth mentioning but I did score a like new pair of Nike Airs for $20!

Regardless of the components condition, if that was a Tange 2 frame, somebody got a screaming bargain.

Ok The winning bidder failed to claim this bike and it is back up for auction. It is a Tange 2 frame, 56 cm (CT) with a few component issues that are easily remedied. Anyone have an opinion on the value? Thanks

It must be on some other auction site cause I can't find it on ebay, or it sold.

That is sweet! Well to give you an idea what the value is, I paid $75 for a similiar Prestige and drove over 100 miles each way to get it cause I knew that was a bargain. The condition was about the same. I would estimate that a bike like that would bring over $100 on ebay plus shipping if it was springtime.

This Nishiki has a computer attached that I will be swapping onto my Raleigh Technium. I use the Raleigh on rollers and it will be nice to know exactly how many miles I am logging, pace ect...

Way to go! That'a one nice riding frame. You're going to enjoy it and you got it at a great price. Plenty of room for tires, bar wrap and new cables if it needs them.

And aced my $48.99 out at the last second, but only cause I was working and couldn't get to a computer to raise my bid in the last few minutes...:notamused::mad::rolleyes::rolleyes::D

Ganzen I'm driving up to the big O today to pick up a Fiestaware teapot at the Goodwill store, so if you just want to call them and say you've got a friend who's going to pick up the Nishiki for you I'll take care of the light work....:D

It is a 1985 model built in Japan for the US market. Sugino tack and Suntour Cyclone derailers. I took it apart over the weekend and it is every bit as nice as claimed in this thread. I will have to buy a few parts (cables, bartape, brake pads ect...) to put it right but a plus is that it has extra length on the stem and post and should adjust to fit. If it adjusts out and rides as nice as I believe it will I'll be flipping the Raleigh and keeping this bike instead.

Pics after a complete teardown and rebuild. Waxed the nude frame and added new pads and bartape. The BB spindle, one of the cups and two of the balls were galled. Probably the reason it went to Goodwill.

I recut and polished both spindle races on the lathe and reground and polished the cup race on the lathe using a grinding/polishing attachment. I have included before and after pics of the spindle and cup (I also have pics of the process if interested). I popped the two galled balls out of the cage and replaced them with two fresh balls and then reassembled the BB. Everything works great and the bike has a nice ride.

I'm pretty sure you have a 1986 model, as opposed to a 1985.

Keep an eye on those races, The grinding and polishing may have cut though the hard surface treatment. You may be in store for some accelerated wear.

Nice job, thats a sharp looking ride, shouldnt dissapoint.
