Northern California - Diablo Virgin ride - Saturday 12/27

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

To celebrate BlastRadius's birthday and the fact that he's still a Diablo virgin, I'm proposing to take him up the hill tomorrow (Saturday), starting at 9am.
My proposed route is this:
- Start from the Athenian school, climb up the South side to the summit
- Descend to the North gate
- Climb up the North side to the Junction
- Descend South side to the Athenian school.
I estimate this will be just under 40 miles and 5,000 ft of climbing. This will give him the full tour of Diablo.

Anyone else want to join us to see Henry de-flowered? The Athenian School is here:

Ah man! I'm out of town. This should be good. Is there still snow on top? Take lotsa pics!
Sounds good, don't think I can make it.
One word of caution though, it's been pretty chilly here just the other side of the Oakland Hills, so at the top of Diablo you'll be needing some extra layers to avoid becoming George...

Hopefully the whole road is open by now.
I don't think the pace will be too fast. I need to pace myself since I've not climbed it before.

Henry,
Even when you are taking it easy, you are faster than me up the mountain (on my good days).

Was up there earlier today and, yes, the road is open to the top but the last quarter mile had ice for the last quarter mile in all the shaded regions. I contemplated walking down the down side of the summit wall but managed to hold the brakes all the way to the lower lot before getting on with the descent. Still pretty cold up there though. I'd love to join since it's so close to home but I've got errands to run all morning. Have fun guys!

If someone could give me a ride from Foster City there, I'd be in.
Otherwise I'd have to leave home before 6 am to catch BART, which would mean getting up around 4:30 to take care of my dogs first. In which case I would just sleep in and go for a local ride.

It's a social ride, but who knows what Taxi777 is going to do. He'll probably be up and down it before I reach the junction.

I can pick up MsIncredible on the way there. Can you bring her back?
So much for sleeping in tomorrow.

Oh Diablo, How I miss thee.
I'd be tempted for this one, but I'll be out of state. Have fun and take pictures, I want to see snow!

Temperature's still in the 20's at the summit, per the Mt. D hotline - I'm sure you all are having a blast!
You'd be welcome to stop by my house on the way back (just over 7 miles from the Athenian School), but then you'd have to help put together Christmas presents.:innocent:

They froze at the top!
Did you notice the cloud hanging over the top all day long? ... galactic cloud!
Yeah - I noticed the summit was shrouded most of the day. I still think that Shrinkage-a-la-Costanza is the reason. No doubt, waiting for warmer weather to descend and post.
