Nobody likes to have their ride made light of, single or tandem. Here in the tandem forum, there are great members! There is also a naturally larger discrepancy in prices between entry-level and high-end tandem bikes than for single bikes simply because they are more complex mechanically and an almost infinitesimally smaller niche market than single bikes.

I think that pretty much every tandem is fantastically unique whether it be a Calfee DaVinci or a Craigslist's "beachcomber's" find. It's a real shame that anyone would feel the need to be defensive or even worse, offensive to preempt the feeling of defensiveness.

The simple fact of the matter is that we all each have different levels of economic resources available to us and we also each subjectively assign a different level of those resources to our shared hobby of enjoying tandem bikes. :thumb:

I don't believe that anybody here truly intends to be offensive. The high end people definitely fear the "Hah! I way spent less for the same thing...you're a fool!" comment. My considered position on this is that most experienced riders (who own inexpensive tandems) will NOT say such a thing since they will know that it is really NOT the same thing...(frames, componentry and workmanship).

On the other hand, the entry level tandem owners definitely are intimidated by high end owners who would denigrate low end bikes, in part because there really IS a difference in build and components.

But is the difference enough to just skip the low end class entirely? Well, not if that's all you can afford/willing to invest at this time. In a perfect world everyone would have the best bikes irrespective of cost.

Skipping would be like saying for cars that one might as well skip the Hyundais and Kias and go straight to buying a (used) BMW, Lexus or Mercedes. But what if you're just starting out fresh out of school and can't afford/don't want to spend that much for transportation? In the real world everyone has to make adjustments.

It is not the place for civilized people to make judgements on what decisions others make since they are not in the same positions. This goes for low-end owners ridiculing high-end owners (again, imho not something an experienced cyclist does and who really cares about someone who isn't a cyclist?) and high-end owners ridiculing low-end owners.

Can't we all just get along?

So, phooey on anyone who makes anyone else feel bad about their pride and joy. Okay, time for a Group hug! :D

At least in the US you guys have many brands and differing levels of quality to choose from, here in Oz there are plenty of low end tandems, but very few high end ones, except for the VERY rare Cannondale or Trek that comes up on eBay, I once saw a Pinnarello Tandem. NO Santana's, Calfree, DaVinci, Burley etc etc.

Well, even here in the US high-end tandem bike availability/visibility is also more a regional thing (e.g. there is more of a tandem bike market in the warmer Southern and Western states where weather is more conducive to cycling). A lot of retirees/empty-nesters also return to cycling and discover the thrill of riding together on a tandem bike.

Oh, and where is Oz? :D

I forget how good we have it in that regard. In the Seattle area there are three well-regarded fabricators of tandem bikes: R+E, Davidson, and Erickson. They're all only about 30 minutes from where I live. The interesting thing is that (to my knowledge) there are no Santana, Co-Motion or DaVinci dealers in the entire state of Washington, so if we want local service we're practically forced to go to a custom builder.

I believe Oz is Australia.

That's surprising to me. I would have supposed that with bicycling being such a popular activity in the Pacific Northwest (e.g. Portland) that there'd be more of a presence by the larger tandem manufacturers.

There are dealers in Portland for at least two of the major tandem names (I think that the Santana dealer closed in the past year) but none in Washington state, though I recall someone telling me that a local dealer may start carrying Co-Motion. Since Oregon has no sales tax, it's attractive to make large purchases such as a tandem in Portland but it's also 3+ hours away so after-sales service becomes pretty inconvenient.

I'm sure by "service" you meant sales service. I'd assume any good bike shop with tandem experience could service Co-mo, Santana or dV. The owner of my LBS is a very experienced wrench and I wouldn't hesitate having him work on my dV. I purchased the bike from a shop about 70 miles away, but do continue to stop by there for service and other miscellaneous stuff.

What I really meant was warantee service. I don't remember exactly what the warantee was, but I know that the wheels are guaranteed for 3 years. I have dropped in with my tandem a couple of times and have gotten immediate attention. I guess that I'm spoiled by having the builder so close by because I was able to work directly with the owner, bike fitter, bike designer, framebuilder, assembler and painter (who are all different people, by the way) while my bike was being built.

Yes, Oz is the land Downunder, full of convicts, bush rangers, poisonous critters, sharks and an aging mad tandem rider who wishes tandems were more popular here....I get so envious of your group rides.

This Saturday morning a small group of friends and I, with 5 tandems, are hoping to do an Audax ride, it's been planned for months, but the weather forecast is for 36 deg C and there's a murmur of some pulling out...I can't win.

That level of personal service would be fantastic.

So it's basically sort of like New York City, except that you've got an entire continent to spread out to...

I've always had a hanking to try a bit of this from Down Under:
