I am looking at buying a new Xterra, does anyone drive one? How do you like it or not like it. Does it work well with an outdoor/cycling lifestyle? Thanks.

its funny, I remeber reading in car and driver that the target audience for the scion xb is the unemployed 22 year old. a strange market target, methinks...anyway, they are ugly. there are a bunch of cars like it out there that are just as good, if not better.

anyway, I have riden in an xterra. it is an off-road vehicle designed for offroading, ad it shows through in the way it rides, at least in my humble opinion. do with my opinion what you will.

Most cars that can get over 30 mpg could carry 4 bicycles... roof rack or roof rack combined with trunk rack... but a roof rack should be able to hold at least four bikes... I saw a Saturn compact wagon a while back in Fitchburg - with team decals - it had a roof rack holding like 6 bikes up top. Granted, the increased weight and decreased aerodynamics will reduce mileage... but probably not below 30mpg on the highway... I can get 39-42mpg on highway on my unladen SL2 sedan - or... actually mileage is similar with two bikes on the trunk.

You would be surprised the mpg hit you take with a fully loaded roofrack.

If you want an Xterra, wait because they are coming out with an all-new one soon.

If you want a bike transport, I like the CRV or Element. Good mpg's and big interiors.
The XB is cool but I can't see driving that on the freeways...scary.

The Xterra is a really good truck. Nissan's weak point has always been their manual transmission so you might do well to avoid the 5spd. If you plan on doing any heavy 'wheelin the CV joints on the Xterra aren't terribly strong as I recall so you may not be able to run much of a lift. Be sure to check out the Nissan board at http://www.4x4wire.com/

So I think the point you may be getting at is that regardless of what course of action is taken, humans will destroy the planet eventually.

Like rideintexas, I'm considering buying an xterra. Any other xterra owners out there who want to share info about xterras? I'm particularly interested in info about carrying bikes inside - how well do they fit, what's your set up, etc?

The auto and truck manufacturing industry and everything associated with it (road construction, fuel, etc.) is so heavily subsidized at every level that the free market is no longer applicable, and hasn't been for years.

last time I checked, consumers can buy whatever they want.

you can fit four bike INSIDE the scion xb. you know, where they won't get all bugged and crudded up and won't get knocked off at the parking garage and so forth. and you get over 30 mpg even in the city with a standard.

'Consumers' do not a free market make. Anyone can be zombified by advertising into desiring something - advertisers are paid well for their abilities to affect the human psyche in this way...Since this is a bicycle forum, just envision that all those manufacturing, advertising and subsidy dollars went into facilities and products that made people desire to travel by bicycle and train, rather than private automobile.... ;)

I looked at the xterra when I was shopping for a new car, and the thing that struck me about it was that the rear seat legroom seemed awful tight. I ended up buying a Honda CR-V and love it -- it has a very roomy interior for a car its size and it does a great job of carrying the bikes.

I know it's not an Xterra, but I have an older Pathfinder. You can't go wrong with a Nissan, man. Quality vehicles. The 4-wheel drive is very very good, if you ignore the fact that IFS isn't the best set-up for 4 by. Go ahead, you won't be disappaointed. As for the suv haters, it's not like he's going out to buy a Navigator for the love of God. Sheesh, some sedan get worse milage than most mid sized suv's like the Xterra. Keep on listening to that propaganda about Osama loving your suv. Drive what you can afford. Buncha commies.

My wife's Nissan just passed 170,000 miles. I can't speak highly enough about it.
