Today's Denver Post had a good article about using Amtrak's California Zephyr line to access ski resorts in Colorado and Truckee (from California.)
Its a good primer and destination list. I wrote an article about it - but unfortunately Amtrak's dismal performance record comes to mind, especially if you're using a train coming from 1,000 miles away to travel a mere 150 miles (basically using a leg as a commuter line.)
Good for someone with ample vacation time wanting a comfy ride to ski towns. Bad for weekend trips.
A good resource. Original article (http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_11311164) and my review (http://www.futuregringo.com/index.php/2008/12/26/skiing-via-amtrak/).
Try bus trips and package deals with ski clubs. Or the ski train,

Or just ride your bike:

I grew up in Denver, and took the ski train to Winter Park several times a season for years, with very few problems. It was probably just about as reliable as driving; during a major storm, the roads over passes are all messed up, too. In fact, now, with all the traffic jams coming down from the ski areas every weekend, especially Sunday evening, I'm willing to bet that the train is probably way less of a bother than driving.

The Ski Train has a great reputation - and unless there's severe weather we don't hear of delays. I only recall reading about a length hours long delay once in the past few years.
This article was about Amtrak's California Zephyr and the resorts you can access - which unfortunately is much less reliable than the ski train.
Bragi I rarely will do that drive on peak times. I'll usually go up Sunday afternoon and ski Monday - or if I do need to come back Sunday just relax at a restaurant until 7 or 8pm -yeah I-70 is no fun
