I have a chain tool with 2 slots to put the chain. Usually I put the chain link in the bottom slot. The tabs on the top slot broke and flew off when I put the link in there incorrectly once. What's the one on the top for? It would seem all someone needs is the bottom slot.

In most chain tools, there is a 2nd position meant for loosening stiff links.

The primary cradle (slot) is for rivet installation or removal. The second is for tight-link removal. When a chain rivet is extracted, it may end up pressing the two outer plates onto the inner plates. That results in a tight link.
