Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Winter Riding Clothes/Clyde Status Update

I rode my bike for the first time in a couple of months today (sorry, but it is hunting season here in south central Kentucky). I rode in jeans and a jacket, and quickly decided that I need some dedicated winter riding attire. I looked at some riding britches at NATS the other day and they were $100. Are there any cheaper alternatives out there or am I just going to have to save my pennies? What about jackets, gloves, etc . . .

BTW as far as my Clyde status, I have gone from 366 and some change to 253 and some change 113.1 lbs lost total!!! All of you Clydes and Athenas out there who are just starting out, keep it up. It can be done!

Pastor, you can ride in street clothes, but the trick is to make sure they don't have a prominent seam in an awkward spot. Tights are an obvious suggestion, but perhaps as a man of the cloth you have to remain more 'respectable' than the average cyclist.

I've ridden a 30 mile ride in 40 degree weather wearing street clothes and had no problem at all. This ride included an hour and a half stop to attend church services - our pastor was on a roll that morning. :)

Cycling jackets are nice because they are cut long in the back, but really, any jacket will do. Bright colors help make you visible in traffic.

Great job on the weight loss!

I have tights from www.Nashbar.com just click on means clothing and then select tights and pants on the drop down. On the second page there are several selections for $29.99. I got lucky and scored mine for 16.99 and a rain jacket for 5.99 on an uber sale. They happen from time to time, but that was a rare price.
