Come out & play!! It's a great way to kick off the New Year...

Icycle Bicycle
A New Year's Day event, this social ride has been traditionally held in all conditions, even if it is limited to pushing the bikes through hub-deep snow for a few blocks before adjourning to a nearby coffee shop.

January 1st, 2009 11 AM at REI in the Southside Works
The Icycle Bicycle Ride is sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen (http://www.wpwbikeclub.org). It has been an annual event for more than 30 some odd years. Nobody is really certain when it was started.

Hot chocolate and coffee will be provided courtesy of REI at the REI store in the South Side Works. The ride will wend its way around Pittsburgh, mainly on trails. It will be as long or as short as riders want but, if the weather is like last year, several hours. If the road is snow covered it will be a lot shorter, but it will go regardless of sun, rain, or snow. This is definitely not a fast or hard ride. It accomodates all bikes: road, hybrid, mountian, and recumbent, as well as all levels of rider from kids to hard-core hammerheads.

HELMETS ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED.

I'll be on a mostly blue Flyte SRS 3 road bike. No shoe covers, so I'll be sporting my platform pedals & work boots.
There will be a few of us Bikeforum folks there. I just talked to Spinnaker via the phone, and he plans to show.

Nope, although that description almost fits me :p I have yet to take part in any of the S. Park rides. I do think I know who you are talking about though. If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he usually takes part in these New Years Day rides also.

Well, it's only 16 degrees as of now (10:00am). I'm not going to attempt the ride this year. I don't have enough layers to start out in temps that low.

Happy New Year, and have fun to those who are better prepared than I.

See you in the Spring,

Denny

Sorry I didn't make it. It would have been my fourth Icycle ride in a row. I usually justify driving the 50 miles to the "Burgh" by riding a bunch of extra miles once I'm there. I knew with those temperatures the chances of me getting any extra miles would be slim. I rode the trainer in the warmth of the house for 50 minutes instead.

If gas prices remain stable, I'll be along for more club rides this upcoming year. South Park is actually a pretty good option for me from Waynesburg, so maybe I'll see you on some of those rides. Have you tried any of the Peterswood rides? Those are usually pretty good ones, and get a nice turnout.

Hey Plow13.

I ride with TrekDen once in a while.

Are you going to join us on our tour of the GAP / C & O to DC (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=491096) this summer?

TrekDen won't be able to make it. He works too hard. :)

But hopefully he will be able to join us for the send off. You are invited too, if you can't make the whole tour.

BTW I woosed out on the icicle ride too. I called TrekDen and we both agreed it was too $#&@ cold! :)
