Northern California - Mt. Tam and Mt. Diablo for this week.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,
It is certain that I will have the majority of this next week off. What better way to celebrate that than to go up to these climbs that I was never able to do before due to work/family? Wondering if there are others out there that find themselves with precious non-work time and are looking to take advantage of them. What I am thinking of:
Sorry, but Tuesday ride is out. :crash: I've been called back for family duty tomorrow. I'm so sorry. I've managed to negotiate for Friday ride to stay as is, however. *crossing fingers*
Tuesday: Diablo. Depart Dublin/Pleasanton BART at 9:35ish. Meet at the parking lot on the north (*) side of BART entrance. (*) I actually have never been to this BART, so I unfortunately don't know which is north/south. I will probably just find out from the station agent the north side, and wait by the entrance into BART. Sorry.
Diablo route: The Post-Thanksgiving Gobble Ride Route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/BF-11-29-08-Gobble-Gobble-Day-Ride) (Does anyone have any suggestions on improving this route? If not, we'll follow it to the T, possibly excluding the Starbucks stop).
(It's looking like 70% chance of rain in Mill Valley for Friday, so I'm moving this to Saturday.)
SATURDAY: Tam; 10AM
Current plan is to meet at the Bridge by 10 AM. Please PM me for either my cell number or yours so we can confirm whether to wait for you.
Distance: ? Including these climbs, I'm thinking of making it a 50+- mile ride?
Routes: Depending on Distance.
Weather: Rain cancels. Heck, temp below 40 cancels also! Maybe....
For some reason, I'm not getting email notifications of posts. Therefore, would you please send me PM's if you are in need of timely info for coordinating the ride? Thanks.
Mt Tam Wednesday, eh? Hmmm. I'm interested enough to ask about route and meeting point...
I have tomorrow off from work. Not sure what I had on the books, but any Tam expedition isn't complete without the pre-tam warmup through SF.

OK, Monday might be too soon for now (Sorry Ramon), given that it's already 8 at night. Let's do Tuesday, first.
Tam on Tuesday? That rolls! Or Diablo on Tuesday, which doesn't roll. Either way. Let's get out there.
Looks like Chris is up for Tuesday. Anyone else?
Let's see. Pete's up for Tues., Wed., and Fri., Ron is up for Fri., Beaker potentially Wed., Kaiserboy Fri....Friday sounds like a popular choice.
I'll edit the first post to have Tues. and Fri. to be the final choices.
Ok. I'll just sulk and go climb Bohlman On Orbit tomorrow by myself.
Tam Friday might work for me -- it'd also get me a jump start on my 09 goals when the year is still young. Need to keep an eye on the weather though - end of the week is looking damp.

I hope you can come. Friday is not looking wet yet, according to weatherunderground.

OK. Let me know where to be Tuesday at 10am.
I went up PageMill today. It was cold, and that wobbly sign has finally died.

I'm up for Diablo or Tam or both. Any day should be fine. Unless the kids claim a ski day.

Pete, Alright, you're on for Friday then. Sorry I should have guessed what you meant earlier. I mean, why did I go to Mindreader School? Sheesh. ;)

Ben, Chris and I (if anyone else) will be heading to Diablo tomorrow then. Once we figure out the route/place, I'll post it here.
OK. Let me know where to be Tuesday at 10am.
Chris, I'm thinking Caltrain and/or Bart to the starting line. Let me go and research the route and I'll be right back with the start time/place.

Whereabouts on the bridge is the usual meeting point? I'm an SF/Marin noob, so you guys will have to cut me some slack.
Also, what would be good options to get there from the East Bay either car+parking or perhaps BART. Only thing with BART is that I'm guessing that I'll have to watch my timing getting back across the bay with a bike on a Friday :(

Great! Thanks Pete - I'll see you there. It'll be nice to ride in the city with a pro such as yourself, and as a bonus I get to finally understand how to navigate BART in cleats.:thumb:

Use the handrails up and down the stairs (no bikes on the escalators).
One of the many reason I prefer my MTB shoes. ;)

Cleat covers!!!! I've actually learn how to run in my road shoes, although I wouldn't recommend that. I haven't fallen on slippery floors yet ... uh oh ... I think I've jinxed myself now. LOL

So are big ones if the right people don't see you/care. ;)
I haven't fallen on slippery floors yet Nor have I, but that's because my shoes are sane and incorporate a modern innovation known as "tread". :P

Thanks Paula - I was just thinking about the front of my Keo's and the top bit of an escalator and thought that would be a bad thing, [shiver].

+1 I use them if I've got to walk anything more than a few yards - I'm impressed how well they work, especially in my office when I come back from a lunchtime ride, but haven't quite mastered the goofy walk yet. Looking forward to catching up with you on Friday, Ron.

This was the route we actually followed which cuts out most of the MUP in the Walnut Creek area (courtesy of Jim/Benridin).

That's why I have commuter bike shoes with tread. They are great for being able to run/walk/bike. However, they don't feel nearly as good as my Sidis/Looks on a hard ride.

Sometimes after those East Bay rides I just take a chance on the escalator...N. Montgomery's the best

Tam Friday... We should be in!
Ramon, you have the Pre-Tam warm up planned? How much earlier do we have to start for that again?

I'll wuss-out first and ask, is anyone worried about that 40% chance of rain in Mill Valley as forecasted by weatherunderground for Friday? Or should we all just bust out our rain-gears?
I ended up riding up Page Mill with Yqduf/Chris early this morning, and the descent was a bit dicey.
I'm holding my breath, waiting to see if they change their mind as to whether showers on Friday might end up being showers on Saturday instead.
I could probably make the weekend instead if it looks like waiting a day might be better; if it's only light sprinkles I'll probably be in. Marin always seems to get the worst of the rain though.
Pretty darn early, 2 hours? . I have the day off but can't go too skitzo as I have a show on Saturday.

Once is enough...never again in the rain...I'll decide that morning if I'm doing the ride.:p
^^ without doubt one of my all time favo(u)rite threads. I recall that as my first "wow, these guys really are kinda nuts" moment while lurking through NorCal last year. Very happy to experience that vicariously.

Alright, count me in for Tam on Friday. 10 am at the Golden Gate bridge, right? CalTrain gets in at 9:36 so that would work, if I knew a definite path to the starting point. Will others be on that train to guide me? I could use it.
To 2009. here we come, like it or not.

We'll be on the tandem, so no train for us. I normally would. You can ride to our place again if you want Chris. Otherwise the route is EASY to the bridge.
I can post it up later if no one else is going on the train.
PS- Caltrain is running a regular schedule that day aren't they?? It's 1/2 so it's not a holiday.

Man looks like 50% chance now.
Would saturday be better???
I could be in for Saturday; not sure if that's much better though - 30% chance currently. Sunday??
I don't think I can make anything this week, but I'd definitely be interested in joining a ride at some point in the near future.

Hmmm....I propose that if the chance for rain on Friday for Mill Valley according to WeatherUnderground is over 40% by noon tomorrow, we postpone it to a later late (like Saturday). Same criteria applies to Saturday. Of course, this is a proposal and others that might have better suggestions, please come forth.
I can only ride Friday, so I'm planning for whatever the weather might bring.
