I never heard of anyone doing this torching business. What do you mean by brake pressure problems?

The only reason I can think of to take a torch to brake pads is if you thought that the pads were contaminated with grease or oil that somehow permeated the pads. torching the pads would possibly burn off the contaminate even if it were below the surface of the pad where a degreaser might not be able to easily penetrate.

Unless you believe you fall in this category, I would look for other causes of your brake problems. Are your rotors in good shape? Are the calipers operating correctly? Is there anything that need lubed? (Probably not an issue with hydraulics?)

You heard it here. I was the person that recommended torching the pads. I have torched tons of hayes pads, the only concern I had was that shimano pads are normally organic and I dont know how they would torch. Why not just give er.....eh.

What do you mean by pressure problems? If you have oil on the pads then the brakes just won't work. Have you tried bleeding them?

If the pads have contamination then try sanding a thin layer off the surface. Sometimes the oil only soaks in a little.

Burning the oil of the pads is a last resort at your own risk kind of thing. I have seen the pad material seperate from the backing plate on a few pads that have previously had fluid burnt off. Perhaps they where heated too much, if you do heat them be carefull.

Several types of pads around. the hard ones,Sintered pads, will appear to have wisps of metal in them. They last longer, but do take more effort to get up to working temperature, and last a lot longer than the organic pads. Only problem is they wear out the disc,s quicker.
