Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hi!
I am looking into getting back into cycling and are looking for a cheaper mountain bike to get started with. Less than $250 is all I can spend right now. Can anyone recommend what the best bang for my buck would be with that limit? Many thanks in advance!
Look on craigslist, depending on where you live you may be able to find a decent bike for that amount. Anything new is going to be crap!!!!!

+1 on going used. I got my first real bike on CL.
an 05 Gary Fisher Tassajara for $200. Awesome bike for the $$
Agree with everyone else in this case, i bought a 2005 Trek 4500 for $120 in excellent shape.

Chalk up another vote for used. I used to have a Fisher Tarpon ($260), and within a year I managed to break a crankarm, split a fork stanchion, and mangle my rear wheel doing basic XC and commuting

I was looking for a second sport. My first one is beating the sh*t out of smart ass people who get on message boards and type stupid sh*t.

Oooooo...another "E-tough guy". Can't wait to see where this is going. You're an eloquent speaker BTW.:roflmao2:
C mon guys the " the try a different sport remark wasn't appropriate". Like stated go on craigslist or ebay and look for a used quality brand bike.

If the guy is so thin skinned that a joke, on an internet forum, stings him. This isn't going to be a good experience for him.

For the money you are looking to spend, used is the only way to go. If you can up it to $350 you may be able to find an entry level bike that you can upgrade as needed. Good luck.

Seeing as no sh*t has been beaten out of me, that must mean:
a) I'm not a smart ass,
b) I didn't type stupid sh*t, or
c) You're really bad at your first sport.
I suggest that you revise your first sport to not being cheap.

Of course his thin skinned foul response isn't any better. Some are birds of a feather and don't even know it. LMAO
note I am not saying the dude is an Ahole. Maybe he had a bad day. Maybe he honestly feels he is helping the guy and does not see his opinion as a discouragement to others. Maybe he only plays a grumpy guy on the intarewb. Hell maybe it was all in jest because many of us know how damn expensive this hobby can get. Who knows. But seriously, the other guys response was perhaps worse than the comment that offended.

+10 That was a AWSOME comeback!!!!!!!!!! But it is true, this is a very expensive sport if you get into it. My car and truck together don't equal in value to one of my bikes.

BACK to the topic !!
$250 will be the minum to get you into something new., but like mentioned above, a good used bike can be bought for that, If you must have new, bikes at Sports Authority [ & similar type stores ] are on sale at times.
Check Craigslist for a month or 2 you will find somthing you like and your size. i found my buddy 15 in about a 50 mile radius in 2 weeks.
