*I hate hearing about stuff like this* :(

RICHMOND, Calif. -- Police are looking for the drivers of two vehicles who hit a woman bicyclist, dragged her down the street to her death and then fled the scene.

Richmond police Officer Ramon Middleton says 49-year-old Laura Casey was riding her bike at around 6 p.m. Saturday when a white, four-door sedan rear-ended her, knocking her down.

Witnesses told police that Casey screamed for help for about 30 seconds before being struck by a second vehicle, which dragged her 25 feet, then drove away.

Richmond Police Lt. Manjit Sappal says it appears both drivers realized they had hit the bicyclist.

“The first vehicle actually did slow down, the driver looked back and then continued and fled the scene,” said Sappal. “And then the second vehicle ran over her, slowed down and then fled the scene as well.”

Witnesses told police the first car was a white mid-sized four-door sedan. Police say it may have front-end damage. Witnesses were too upset to give police a description of the second car.

“Some of them were traumatized and not able to provide information at the time and so we're still waiting for information to surface from those interviews,” said Sappal.

Carlson Blvd. is one of the thoroughfares that run north-south thru the city. Sparsely populated, it runs parallel to the train tracks. Its speed limit is 35 miles per hour, or at least that's what the sign says.

Clyde Louis was riding his bike there Sunday.

“The respect for a person who's not in the car is gone. Nobody is thinking safety anymore,” said Louis.

Police say they don't have any information about Casey. Neighbors say the cars that kept on going show disregard for life.

“That's sad that nobody would help somebody that they ran over,” said neighbor Beverly Muccular. “They probably didn't have insurance or a license and they kept going.”

Leaving an accident when someone is injured is felony hit and run. Police also say the drivers could also be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Beggars belief.

Another sorry data point showing how some people in society (two more here) lack even a single ounce of conscience, remorse or comprehension of how to empathize with other living beings. Ugh.

Heard about this on the news earlier today ... some people are sick and have no regard for human life. It's sad ... RIP Laura.

Man. I hope the driver of the first car hears this story and dies of guilt. If only he or she had stopped, their accident probably wouldn't have killed anyone.

So sad.

Pete, reportedly witnesses were coming to help when the second car hit her. There are still good people out there, just not these two drivers. Be careful out there everyone. RIP Laura.

Unfrigginbelievable. This is like a worst-movie ever plot. How awful for her and her family!

I hope the perpetrators suffer as much as the suffering they caused.

RIP Laura.

I hope they catch them. Richmond already had enough bad stuff going on.

I don't normally head out that way, but this is probably a good enough reason not to specifically hang out there.

There's a lot of good people there, but the scumbags just keep pulling stuff. The Recumbents of the East Bay rides there, on the Bay Trail and through part of the town. Mostly in the industrialized area by the bay. We've been out to the Jeremiah O'Brien.

The news said the driver of the first car has turned herself in to police. They are studying some videos to see if they can find the other car. This was at Ohio and Carlson Blvd. The relatives say her bicycle was her only means of transportation.

Yeah...Good one..

So let me get this straight... you're driving along and there is an obstruction in the road bigger than a normal pothole [like a human being!!!] and your reaction isn't to swerve out of the way from something that can damage your car, puncture your tires, let alone a person you could hurt!?!? FAIL!!! Welcome to jail and a lifetime of guilt, DUMB@SS!!!

It's not just cyclists. In Livermore, a woman was hit at the scene of an accident, and the white Lexus that hit her just kept going.

Why do I feel confident that if I ever hit anyone with my car my first reaction will be to stop and help, rather than think "I'm going to get in trouble!" and leave some wounded pedestrian/cyclist laying in the middle of the road?

Because you're not a ******bag/dickhead.

I always wonder about this. Let's just say you DID hit a cyclist and then decided to take off. The next day you read about it and the person you hit dies. I don't care how big of a scumbag you are, that must live with you CONSTANTLY!

Not only that, but live with the knowledge that the person you hit was laying in the rode begging for help after you drove off, before someone else was unlucky enough to hit them (and then also ******* drive off, but regardless).

Of course, that would bother you if you had any conscience, but if you had any conscience you wouldn't have driven away in the first place.

To me, this is less cyclist/car and more human/inhuman behavior. It's disgusting, and I don't care how "traumatic" it was for the driver and that caused them to flee. It's more traumatic for the woman who was hit and left in the road to die.

There are areas of Richmond and Oakland where police think that people have been murdered this year just for fun. As pointed out by someone in the comments on the article, that's a bad area to be in Richmond for any reason. She could have stayed in her car and called 911. She could also have not driven on a suspended license. My bet would be that it's time to mandate totally clear glass for all windshields and front windows, no tint at all. It DOES make a difference.

I have to say that the first driver IS responsible for this woman's death. If she would've done the right thing and stopped, halted traffic, and tended to Laura, the second collision would've never happened. Not to say the second hit-and-run is not to be held responsible, but that second hit could've been totally avoided.
