I own an earlier model Brompton copy, made by this company. It looked even more like the B than this one does since it has a fully tubular main frame. I can't speak about the model you feature here in the link, but the one I have has seen hard service and apart from one or two minor issues, it has been great. I have ridden it more than 3600 miles over about two years. It still works perfectly.

The main faults were that it used the very early Brompton style single acting caliper brake and it needs a damned good squeeze to make it stop. This is mainly a feature of the mechanical design than anything else. Later Bromptons than those of the mid 1990s had a redesigned brake, I believe. Certainly the new ones have a much better design. The bike I bought also had a weak plastic chain tensioner that would break in some circumstances. I bought an upgraded metal one which is now used as standard on these Grace Gallant bikes.

I am glad I bought the bike. I really enjoy riding it.

Do a search for Merc and you will find a whole lot of threads about them. That's the name they were marketed under in the UK. They are nolonger available here new. I believe that the lady who imported them was warned off by Brompton.

Wow - that's really expensive now in GB pounds. £567!! I can buy a Brompton cheaper. When I bought my Merk bike it cost £330. The pound has taken a dive of late. Perhaps that is the issue.

Yes, that's $1,188 USD. I believe one can buy a genuine basic Brompton here in the US for close to that price, though it won't come with that 7 speed Shimano Nexus drivetrain.

Ayeeee!! That's even worse I thought it was Sinagporean money. Now it comes out at £814.80.

Arrrrghhhh - I will just have to learn to stay at home and buy home produced everything until our banks have paid off all the bad US Mortgage debt they so wisely invested in. Then we might get back to having a currency that is worth something. You foreign guys will soon be able to buy a new Brompton for the price of a night out if you wait a wee while.

Evil,

I think you are probably right. Those amounts could be in Sinagporean money, not US dollars. Non the less, they are still high for a "knock off" Brompton.
