when you go to the used booksellers and buy several books for pleasure reading and a few weeks later you check your book list for classes and the two books are now required for a class, no longer pleasure reads...d*mn.

You may be a dork despite any of that...just sayin'.

Wouldn't it just mean that you took a course that interests you and/or your professor has good taste?

Some of the best books I have read were required reading in my English courses. That isn't the case if you have a dry & boring professor, but some do try to push the envelope... especially if your curriculum pushes critical thinking in the English department you can have some very interesting reading assignments.

Rereading "Heart of Darkness" was wonderful when coached to it and discussed in class.

All I can say is - my Tolkien Literature class in college had the easiest to comply with 1,500 pages of required reading ever.

True dorkiness is defined as following a series of 11 books over 18 years; having seriously grown tired of it; finding out that the author has died before the story was finished, and you know you are still going to buy the final book, whoever finishes it just to see how the stupid thing ends.

Locke's "Second Treatise" and Mill's "On Liberty". They should be great reads, though now I have to hear a bunch of kids b*tch on how the books are terrible. I am a dork for many reasons, this just seemed like another example to chock up.

OK, maybe with those books I see your confusion... ;) I also have the Mills book, which I picked up at a used book store (or possibly a thrift store) And I would probably pick up Locke's if I saw it too.

I see it as an educated outlook, not dorky.

Just go into it willing to share your insight, and maybe learn from others if anyone else takes the reading seriously enough to have any.

Damn, I knew there was a reason I should have done my reading for that class. As it was, I had to try to impress them with tales of affirmative action in 1930s Soviet Central Asia... that was about as effective as affirmative action in 1930s Soviet Central Asia :(
