Contractors are finally repaving the road in FDR park but unfortunately detour signage is practically non existent. After getting detoured through a muddy ballfield, up through a new waterfront park, and back onto the fresh macadam path, I discovered the path is completely blocked north of the 14th Street ConEd plant.

Anyone have any more info on this? Any idea when things might be back to normal? Considering how much fuss we make over the West Side path I'm a bit surprised I hadn't read about this anywhere.

Stacy they are a few contract coming out to do that work. My company is currently working on a bid for some of that work. If you want more details I will have some after the New Year.

No idea, I saw that a month ago (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=7963494&postcount=89) but was still able to get through after trekking through the mud.

ECD - would love more details if you got 'em! I like taking that path but figured I won't be able to until the spring at this point.

Maybe if it ever stops raining I'll head over to 14th Street and try to approach it going south. I probably could've just tossed my bike over the clutter but I had no idea what conditions might be like north of ConEd.

Edit: Sorry I must have missed your earlier thread.

No worries - that detour was a pain enough for me. Rims are still a bit scratched up from the mud :notamused:

This past week hasn't been a good week for contractors. Many job that were out to bid have been postponed till next month and some in diffinately. The only thing we can come up with is maybe the funding has been pulled! I will keep you guys and gals updated as I hope to land a few of these projects.

I was rather surprised by how well my All Condition Armadillos handled the mud. At one point they started to get a little sloppy so I stopped and my feet nearly slipped out from under me. Maybe I should recycle my tires into sneaker soles, like huarches, when they're too worn for the bike :p

So I checked it out today and the ConEd corridor is open again. There's fresh blacktop from the ConEd facility to around 7th Street - just north of the bathrooms - then it turns to the same old nasty gravel, mud and water filled pot holes, that's been there all along. I think the smooth macadam makes the old stuff look even worse.

So for now, no more detours through the mud! Yay!!

I commute from south ferry to the 59th st bridge and had a pretty gross ride yesterday when I decided to see where I could get on the East side path on route back downtown. Apparently right now you can only really enter no higher than 37th st if you want to head south.
One thing I can say that once they are done it will be amazing. That bandshell, all of the fields, tracks and stretching areas, paths etc I look fwd to it all being connected!
I just don't like the amount of obstacles on the path near the seaport. Its unnecessarily wide, and there is a lack of ramps, and there are all these paths re-routing me. That, and people don't keep their head up. Not even the runners.
I look forward to this completion as much as anyone!

The path doesn't exist between 37th and 63rd - but one day.... :)

If this were Las Vegas it would be done in less than a month.

Four or five years if we're lucky :)

Maybe it'll be completed a few millennia after the grand unveiling of the fabled "Second-Avenue Subway"...

Once they decide to do it, they can practically lay down bikeway over night. The major roadblock is negotiating with the UN. The second is getting some developer who wants to build on that open space just south of the UN to fund a bike path.
