Utility Cycling - Not your typical Big Dummy.... so far

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just got it back from the powdercoaters. I didn't really like the green and figured the next batch of Big Dummies would cost as much as a current one with a new paint job.
Questions:
They didn't do the greatest job on the painting-- check out the fork. A stem fits on with a little wiggling. Would you just stand the paint down on the steerer tube a little or what?
How do you chase the threads on the mounting points or is even necessary? They plugged everything with little silicon plugs but not everything is perfect.

Cool color! You might want to consider sanding your fork where your bearing races will sit. I'll guess that the paint is too thick to get bearings on to the steerer tube. For teh mounting points, get a tap set from harbour freight ro whathave you and tap/clean the threads. Powder paint is sticky if you try to force the issue... Hope any of this was helpful...
Good luck!

The fork...agreed about sanding it. Too bad those guys didn't just tape it off for you. But easily fixed.
More importantly, that color choice is way too fun. Congrats for having the stones and patience for doing that. I just took some parts to get powdercoated: a 1x1 frame, and my Xtracycle Kickback and TekDek... sooooo tempting to tear down the Goat and do the frame, too.
But until my 1x1 is rebuilt, the Goat is my only ride.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing this come together! Keep those day-glo pix comin' man!

Thanks. They did tape off the crown race setting area so they did know what they were doing (to a certain degree...). I can fit the stem on but not any of the carbon fiber headset spacers. I'm going to have to sand it down.
I worked on it a little more today. It really isn't as day-glow orangish as the pictures make it look. More of a red with orange hints. I'll take some pictures outside as it gets more built up.

Nice to see another non-green Dummy.
I did all the work on mine myself, and I really regretted it. I'm sure I have at least 40 hours in the thing. Now that it's done I'm sure Surly will release a non-ugly color just to spite me - though with them, that's next to impossible.
That will be a snazzy Big Dummy when you get it built up. I've toyed with getting a few frames powder coated. I'm just too damn lazy to strip them down. Seems the only time I have a bare frame is when I'm about to sell a bike or put it into storage.

JeffS: Have any pictures of your non-green Dummy?
Just got my 1x1 back from the powder coating shop. Really tempted to strip the Goat and do it...saw a nice orange/brown color at the shop that would look pretty swell against all the black components...
I need help.

Looks sweet! I prefer an ass ugly color. Its a turn off to thieves, which is why I figure Surly chose a drab military green. No one would look at a BD twice.

Me too. It is a utility bike after all. Nothing wrong with it looking like one.
