Texas - Interest check - Monthly Vintage Ride of 30-35mi (starting N. Dallas?)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After the success of last year's Vintage Ride in the spring that I put on, and the Vintage Picnic that David Cheakas of Southwest Frameworks did later in the year - I'm thinking of trying to organize a monthly Vintage ride.

Speed would be a social, no drop, pace of around 16-16.5 mph average, no more than 35 or maybe 40mi tops - with perhaps a couple of "sprint" sections built into the route(s) for those who want to stretch their legs and test their steel.

Ride would be open to any and all pre-1990ish bicycles (some exceptions allowed for 90's lugged steel bikes) and their riders.

Start location TBD, likely somewhere in N. Dallas or maybe as far north as Plano. Had also thought of alternating start locations with either a more central Dallas start location so that some of those living further south wouldn't have to drive so far each month. That is TBD as well depending on who is interested.

Time and day of month - I was thinking the Second Sunday of each month, starting at either 8 or 9am depending on the time of year. I am however open to other suggestions on dates.

except for when I'm teaching scuba I'd be interested.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a more central start point (Mid Cities, DFW airport area)would bring out some of the Ft Worth guys. Either way I'm in.

Wouldn't work for me- wrong speed, wrong time, wrong bikes.

The start point could be for several rides. Roadies could do 30-40, cruisers could do 10-20 slower paced and all meet back up at the end. Afternoon might be better for church goers.

I'd be down for a slower paced, shorter ride until I get into shape, then I'd join the longer/faster group.

I'm up for it. I do have a time consideration that makes the mornings better.

I work at 10:00 PM on Sunday nights and sleep during the afternoons.

Well hopefully with a set day per month you can hopefully schedule to make a few of them.

Perhaps two groups, one more on the Ft Worth side, one in Dallas and we'll plan to meet on the other's ride a couple times a year. Even once a month, driving to the mid cities for a 30mi ride is difficult to rationalize. I'll soon be either in Allen, N. Plano or Frisco.

That's a good idea as well. If we can get enough people for each group and a leader for each.

Also when the summer rolls around I'll certainly be looking for a morning ride.

Sounds good. :)

Let's see what the weather is looking like for Feburary. If possible we may try for a trial ride that month, otherwise, probably wait till March to get this ride kicked off. As it is now, my plan is to have a north dallas / plano area start point. I welcome anyone from mid-cities / ft. worth to organize their own version of the ride.

Works for me. I won't be much help on routes that far west though.

This sounds great to me even if I am out of shape right now. All I have is old steel although nothing really high end. Since I live in Garland, a Sunday morning N Dallas ride (contrasted to FW) would be perfect. Count me in if its not too chilly. I'm a cold weenie. I can handle 100F+ but wind chills do me in.:notamused:

+1 But I'm working on it. Not working too hard or too successfully though, lol

I'm not a fan of the cold either, unless in a fast moving group that constantly keeps my heart rate and thus body heat up. Then it's barely tolerable. Let's plan for a February ride, and if the weather turns against us we can have a back up plan for breakfast and bike talk instead. ;)

FWIW, I ran across this midcities route earlier today.

I'll roll the '87 Trek out with the trailer to carry the thermal pizza bags and thermos's. Some really nice routes up north out of Mc Kinney BTW.

+1 and by then I'll have at least one vintage bike to ride.

I rode 24 miles this morning. My normal group ride didn't ride, so I just rode the same route myself. The funny part was that I saw more riders than I normally do out riding. New year's resolutions? Bikes for Christmas? Don't know. Internet weather showed 33 degrees when I left out.

RX of the North? Awesome!

You could still hammer me pulling that trailer, loaded, and doing one legged drills though, lol.

The further south and west, the better for me. I'm in southwest Fort Worth.

By the time the first of these rides gets going, I'll likely be moving further north and east. I'll try to make the ride start in N. Dallas or at the furthest north Plano area.

I have contacted the board members of my club, Plano Bicycle Association, about incorporating the Second Sunday ride into the regular ride offerings of the club. Doing so has a number of benifits, not the least of which being an arranged start location (Coit & Spring Creek - Plano, Tx) with several locations to eat post-ride. I will be meeting with the board during their next meeting to discuss this and will update the thread as developments happen.
