I'm currently riding on a set of Mavic 517's cause I'm still using XT, V brakes on my Rockhopper. Well, when some local guy sold a set of BB-5s with rotors and hardware for $50, I decided it's time to go disc. I picked up a rear wheel with Deore disc hub and Mavic 139 disc only rim (low end rim, I know). Then I found a Rigida Taurus disc only rim (no hub). So now, I've got to decide. Should I 1) buy a front hub (XT off ebay) and some spokes and re-use both 517's, 2) buy a front hub and use the lower end disc only rims I've got, 3) buy an assembled higher end front wheel plus a rear rim and transfer the Deore hub to a better disc only rim. I was going to re-use the 517s, but someone advised me that disc only rims would be a better choice over the 517s (lower weight).
So which of those three choices would you go with?
BTW, I do most of my own work so I'll do the wheel builds.
I ride only technical trails, do some small jumps, logs, etc. With two fused neck discs, I'm not doing any high jumps. I'm not fast but will ride some reasonably difficult stuff.
Below is a pic of the Rockhopper before I put the 517s on.
