Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Used dura ace cranks for $170: worth for it a first fixie build

Hey,

I am building up an old schwinn world sport that I love so much as my first fixed gear bike. I am going to repaint it properly and I am really stoked. I got a cheap wheelset for it. They are fomula hubs with alex rims and a 16t dura ace track cog. Someone in my area is selling a used dura ace crankset for $170. Initially, I hadn't thought I was going to spend that much on the cranks, especially without a BB or chainring. Should I go for it? If not, what else should I consider? Also, what kind of chainring?

depending on how old and how used they are i would say probably not. if they are X-type BB Dura-Ace then maybe. but then again they would a bit overkill for a fixie. But if they are old square taper jobs like i get the feeling they are 50$ tops

Your whole bike is worth less than those cranks, wheels & all, it would be overkill for sure

i'm assuming it's road, in which case it's not ideal.

nor is it in any way shape or form necessary. the idea of a $170 dura-ace anything on an old schwinn conversion is downright stupid.

I got a DA track crank, octalink with BB and a Vuelta 49 tooth ring, all in great shape for $160 on CL. The DA words were a bit worn from straps. So your deal is not a deal at all.

BTW I put it on a '88 Schwinn Premis that has track ends on it. That Columbus Tenax tubing.
I love the bike and the crank.
I got it since it was a good deal and will put it on a BK frame next month.

What cranks do you have on there now? If they're not riveted, I'd just get some single stack chain ring bolts, put your chain ring on the inside of the spider and ride.

I'm using a similar wheelset as you, though. they feel solid. No problems yet, good choice.

i don't think DA is overkill for your bike, but $170 is not a good deal.

paid $20 for my 105 cranks on my conversion (schwinn world.). i love my bike, but this is a bit too much for this build.

The original (early 70s) Dura-Ace track cranks used a 130mm BCD; later models (late 70s until ~85) used a 151mm BCD. I don't think any used a 144mm BCD -- that was for Campy & clones (although 60s and earlier Campy cranks used 151mmBCD as well -- go figure).

dura ace 7600 cranks are 144bcd. also da 7710 octalink (present) are 144bcd.

+1...the DA 7600 and DA 7710 cranks are both 144bcd...

The Dura Ace EX track had a 151bcd.

I'm not aware of any DA track crank that used a 130bcd..

The Dura Ace 10 pitch crankset used an odd size proprietary ring..I believe it was a 122bcd...

i have Dura Ace 7600 octalink cranks & BB on my all dura ace Fuji Track Pro. LOVE THEM.

when you get a bike that deserves them, make the investment. but no insult intended, your build does not deserve them.

also, used Dura Ace track cranks (alone) are typically around $100 or so on Ebay these days. so expect a used set (chainring, cranks, BB) to clock in around $200. Pay less than that and you are getting a great deal, more than that and you're getting ripped off.

agreed. i don't care whether it's a "deal" or not. do you really need dura ace cranks? i got a set of used ultegra cranks for $30 and a set of new 105's for $60. they are both road doubles, and i've beat the crap out of both if them. they are great. you need to ask yourself if it's worth another $110-150 just to have your crank be 10 grams lighter, say "dura ace" on the side, and be a proper track crank when you aren't even riding a track frame.

That bike needs Dura Ace cranks like a Look 496 needs Bullet Proof cranks.
