Anyone here ever used the web to learn guitar. I have been playing around a bit at guitartricks. They want $12.95 a month for access to lessons on video.

Any sites that you guitar players would reccomend?

I have an Ibanez performance series acoustic (PF 400) and would like to learn basic chords, be able to strum along to simple songs with my kids, at scout camp outs, etc.

Thoughts?

I looked a while back for the same thing but didn't find any quality free lessons. Are you looking for free lesson or are you willing to pay?

If you just want to just play cords I suggest you take lessons from an instructor for a month or 2 you so you can get help the technique and a bit of theory. Then just teach yourself the rest.

Dude, chords are easy. Find a chord song you like and are familiar with, look up the chords and just start working it. That's how I learned chords on the mando and guitar. If that's really all you're looking to do, I wouldn't spend money on it...

Look up the tabs for a song you like. It will give you the fingerings.

I also subscribe to a few youtube users who teach via youtube. Its free, but takes time to find somebody you like. I only subscribe to one guitar guy: http://www.youtube.com/user/Fretkillr

Nothing replaces a beginner music book, I'd start at your local music shop.

Why do I envision jsharr playing the guitar much like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skU-jBFzXl0)...including the reaction.

My public library has tons of books and DVDs. I would start there. I did start there.

All good advice. DVD's are good. Youtube is good for lessons and seeing what chords people are using. On line tab sites are hit or miss. Like you said, face to face lessons are great. You will have a few questions you will not be able to ask a DVD. They usually offer them in single lessons or blocks of 4-10 1/2 hour sessions.

This has all chords and variations:

I've been thinking about this. And for a price, I will put on women's shoes, a thong, and video some tailored lessons just for you.

I think you could probably find basic stuff for free by surfing you tube - but much of what I see on there is wrong. I mean wrong in a technical sense.

btw, you should aspire to this (http://www.rathergood.com/gaybar)instead....everyone should, methinks

If rhythm is all your interested in, get something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Chord-Bible-Illustrated-Classical/dp/0785820833/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230760878&sr=8-2

Tabs and Vids are great to a certain extent 'cuz you get instant gratification
which you do need to maintain interest when you are first starting. But try to
alot time to practicing chords and stuff without them. It might not seem like it ,
but exploring, making mistakes and getting frustrated trying your own stuff is
a very important part of the process for developing your skillz :)

Mel Bay is a good start....but Lem makes a good point.

when I started Mel Bay was all there was...and I couldn't understand it without a teacher so I learned by ear.

I wonder what it would be like to start today with all the videos and whatnot available. Faster for beginners perhaps.

I was talking with a neighbor recently - she is a violinist who grew up in Eastern Europe and learned the old school Bolshevik way, two years of solfeg singing before she even touched a fiddle. She is totally against the whole Suzuki method.

Hire an instructor. They're usually about $60 a month for the college guys working at music stores, and much more for semi-professionals giving private lessons. If you've never played a stringed instrument there are some general technique problems you need to get down before you do anything, and YouTube isn't going to tell you if you're doing it right or not.

norsehabanero
12-31-08, 09:44 PM
yes good technique is alyways good and on youtube you might get that or not if you cant afford an instructor always visit your lms (local music store ) they might be able to give you hints or have books for chords, (type in gutair chords and there are many free sites also)
along with music with tabs or chords you just have to look
good luck
