I am considering building up a frame, and the La Cruz is pretty sweet looking steel.

Slathered all over the website is "disc only", and I haven't seen anyone's built up with cantis or centerpull, or whatever non-disc brakes are, but for my own reasons I'd rather build up without discs.

I was in my LBS and I thought I saw the holes drilled in the top of the fork and in the rear where you could mount non-disc brakes, albeit some pretty long reach ones... am I nuts? Is there or is there not mounting for non-disc brakes?

No Canti studs. Disc ONLY. Why not run discs? I test rode a La Cruz when my LBS got them in. Nice ride.

There are plenty of steel frames out there with canti posts.

you are nuts the holes you are talking about are probably fender mounts.

i figured they were fender mounts... would they be too high for normal brakes then?

You need to measure from the hole down to the rim. That's the brake reach (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ra-e.html#reach). If it's less than 75mm or so, you could find a brake that would work. However, since the seatstay bridge probably wasn't designed for braking loads, it might not be strong enough as a mounting structure. I expect the fork would be OK.

gosh, i never thought i'd wanted disc brakes until i got a salsa la cruz; now i'll do my best to never ride anything but disc! but yeah, definitely can't mount cantis on it unless you are a super-welder and don't mind killing the gorgeous orange paint.
