if all goes well I should be moving to Houston in March to attend SAM or the School of Automotive Machinst.
how is riding here? here in south FL we have a lot of fast group rides, all flat of course...are there ANY hills ?

West of here about 2-3 hours by car, there's lots of hills. Here, just parking garages and overpasses.

same here....so same kind of riding.
are there pretty decent club/group rides?
it would be NW Houston, near Hillshire Village, and the Sam Houston Memorial Hospital . just west of Delmar Stadium

You want to check out this club: http://www.northwestcyclingclub.com/ They have big group rides, they congregate on Saturdays way out northwest off of highway 290

I ride with a group that only takes off one day a week.
