Foo - So long

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

2008. Some of my most vivid memories from the past year:
Stacey's plight.... I miss her humor.
Foo meltdown.....probably doesn't need revisiting
Family vacation to Puerto Rico.....absolutely beautiful island.

Glad this wasn't an "I'm running off" thread.
2008 was:
The year of everything conspiring against me riding my bicycle.
Boy Scout cycling adventure (one of the things I had planned on that actually came to pass).
No longer being 100% Classic and Vintage
First bicycle crash in almost 40 years - on Shadowfax no less!
The "working vacation" to Tennessee and the Ozarks
Being thankful I listened to my gut with my 401K money
Being on the receiving end of a relentless media blitz for 2 months leading up to the election
Saying au revoir to Sheldon :(

Nothin wrong with optimism. That is, till reality sinks its teeth into it. :crash:
I enjoyed the past year. Spent 6 months in Arizona. Can't wait to move back, but I probably won't until at least a year from now, and I sure won't be going back to the valley or Tucson.

And this would be proof on how much of a s-hole place this is.

I don't think that the Tucson or Phoenix areas are particularly s holes, but I like Prescott a lot and other more northern cities a lot more. Less heat, more animals, more trees, better scenery, and a greater percentage of friendly people.

I have to agree with the Northern part. I plan on moving up there in the near future.

Its been an epic year for me.
I started cycling. (yes, I'm still a noob).
Had some of the most fun short term relationships I've ever had, and learned a lot about myself in the process.
Met an amazing guy, he's gonna be a keeper for awhile.
Moved out on my "own" (no roommates!) for the first time-- ever.
My dad passed away.
Moved from Mpls to Denver to start a new job and life.
I can't wait to see what 2009 brings.

Back to square 1 with new mortgage
Deciding I no longer like manual gearboxes (on cars)
Still convincing myself I should not buy another bike
Understanding I need to increase my technical knowledge
Learning to accept weight gain during winter
Learning to switch off from work when not at work
Understanding when you tell work you won't do extra hours with no pay then they won't compensate as much (even tho others work 30% more for 5% increase)
Spendng as much time as possible with daughter and family
But also allowing for me time
2nd son born
6th year of marriage
1st XC race
lots to appreciate

Lets see, in 2008, I:
Moved to DC for a bigger and better job
Met a great girl but moved too early in knowing her to have much of an attachment
Realized that chicks on online dating sites just want to get plowed
Got into the best shape of my life
Working for the gov't at any level is great but sucks at the same time

One big, memorable event...on New Years Eve day. I stepped on the scale and saw 199 pounds, for the first time since I was 12 years old. ;)
I DID IT!
581 pounds to 199, since March, 2005.

Congratulations Tom.

Oh yeah, I know that feeling. Pointless mandatory courses, weird security demands...and a lot of people who slack off...
Anyway, 2008 for me:
Finished my MSc thesis with a slightly disappointing result (very mixed feeling about that)
Moved to the US
Had a truly awesome holiday with some of my best friends
Got anywhere with a girl for the first time in my life (okay, leaving religion was 2006/2007)
Subsequently got stood up after buying a ticket to go see her
Learned to be much more self reliant than I used to be
Got really into cycling
Started road running
Started climbing much more (and then had to give it up, but hey)
Expanded my circle of friends with an insane amount
Well, tons of things.
2009 so far for me:
Cracking my head on a problem
Made an awesome Pain de Campagne
Ended up sleeping with a friend....whether this is a high or a low we'll have to see
it's promising to be a great year ;)

Impressive! Do you plan to lose much more?
About 30 pounds of loose skin.....
That'll require surgery, though, so it's gonna be a while.
I'm at about 169-170, lean muscle mass, and that's about as light as I want to get and still be healthy.

Holy cow, Tom! That's awesome! Very inspirational. Of course, now that you weigh less than me, I'm a little pissed...:p
