Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First fixed ride ever: watch out, here comes a careening dork!...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, it didn't go that badly. I didn't dork out much at all, considering my relative clumsiness. I rode for about 10-15 minutes and didn't dump once. I consider that an achievement.

I am still riding with two brakes but could see how I might go to one soon.

It also actually felt pretty comfortable aside from the couple of times that I tried to stand up and coast. I need to work on my trackstand, however. That, I suck at. What else may be a good skill for a new fixie rider to begin with?

I find places to "play". I like the handicap ramps, good to go up and down without use of the brakes. I'll also do things.. like pretend the pots dots on the street are high enough for pedal strike and weave.

A snowplow hit one of those things locally and it went through somebody's windshield. She was in the hospital for a while too. I know...I know, you people don't know what snow is.

I found a fairly flat place, wtihout alot of traffic or traffic lights. Work your way up from there.

Try to learn some cool dismounts, I like to get be going about 8mph or so and jump off the back of the back, grab the saddle and run with it for a while. Scares people, they seem to think I almost crashed, little do they know....

i did this type of dismount long time ago, my left leg didn't get out of the pedal fast enuff, and i dislocated my knee cap- i hade to wear a long leg cast for one month, damn that was itchy!

At least once, find a nice open stretch of road and do a sprint. Get going as fast as you can posssibly spin, now slow down, without brakes. It's very instructional to get the feeling between your muscles 'firing' and 'not firing' at a very high cadence. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened, now I know instinctively to expect it whenever I get up to that magic 15-160 cadence.
My point here is that it's better to get this whole learning experience out of the way somewhere pretty safe instead of doing it coming off a stoplight somtime trying to outrun a garbage truck or something.

Climb a hill at least a mile long with at least a section above 5%. Ride back down without a brake. Don't blame me for anything that happens to you. The usual disclaimers and remiders of Darwinism apply.

Ouch!!!

Most of the time I use platform pedals, I don't really ride my bikes with clipless that often...

I usually spin the pedals over before the dismount attempt. Or I just mosey up to my stop, real slow-like, and take it nice and easy, out of the straps.

I proved how tough chrome bags are by trying that stunt one day.

Me, on the side walk. Dazed.

Bike, in side fast food mart at Plaza Center trolley station. Perched at tabloid stand.

People, laughing with out holding back. Looking at me.

Turn your wheel about 70 degrees and rock back and forth a bit. It just takes practice.

You caught me William. Not only do I hate cream puffs but I also hate doughnuts and various other pastries. I hate all pastries equally and I'm going to use this forum as my primary outlet. I believe in a pastry free world that promotes family values and and rejects pastries and muffins and cakes and even cookies. Besides we all know that your wife and kids are just an elaborate ruse...you cream puff. :D

I, uh, blew up my Bianchi this morning on the way into work. So, I uh, rode in my Cannondale R600 with 10 speeds and a freewheel. So, that's where the idea came from. Pretty wiered riding it after a lot of time with the Bianchi.

I'm in the multi-geared coaster phase of my rotation too actually. I ride my bikes until I get sick of them then I rotate that one into the "maintenance" phase while I ride the other one. Keeps me interested and keeps my bikes in top form (now if I could only figure out how to get myself in top form). Funny, I don't really coast any more on my geared bike anymore.

Then I can get all the new bikes I want!
