Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - 2009 - 1000-Mile Month Challenge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Note: I know this won't fit into everyone's training plans, or life plans, and I know this will not interest everyone, so there is absolutely no pressure to participate in this challenge. If you don't want to participate in this one, that's OK. But it is do-able (I've done it many times) and may encourage some of us to get out there and ride more. :)
The challenge: Ride 1000 miles in at least one month this year ... or as many months as you want ... go for all 12 months if you have the time and energy!! :D
I know lots of you ride this amount and more during your "season", so let us know how it's going. I've posted this challenge in Bikejournal in the past, and there are a lot of enthusiastic participants over there. So I thought I'd post it here too this year. :)
If you don't quite make 1000 miles in a month, check out the 1000-Kilometer Month Challenge: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=498699

My biggest month in 2008 was about 600 miles (rather close to 1000 kilometers).
I'm shooting for at least one 1000 mile month in 2009.

January 2009: 1111 miles. (Yes it was intentional, but only on the last day. Was at 1010 miles yesterday. Added 101 miles today to get to a nice total.) Three centuries this month. Hardest ride: today with 30+ mph winds. Coldest ride: 50 miles at 20-22F, windy, heavy overcast. Most rides had temps in the upper 20s to upper 40s. Missed 5 days due to snow/ice/cold. Gets dark early; two Fenix L2Ds, PBSF blinky, and a great reflective vest made the miles possible.

My excuses: I work full time, I have two young daughters, there's the house and garden to take care of...
...but sure, 1000 miles in a month sounds good. The economy is in the tank and plenty of my plans are in there with it, but riding feels better than ever. I did 350 in January, 420 in February, in the wind, snow, ice, rain, whatever. Spring is coming and my legs are feeling good, and my only other goal this year is to do the Crater Lake Century. I'll pop back in here when I have it done.

So this is where the BIG BOYS meet. I'm usually good for 500 miles per month (year round), but this 1000...? it is a whole new league for me. I will give it a shot. Let's see how long it takes for me to post my first month.
I aim for April...but do not yet count out March.

...that's awesome. I'm still formulating a strategy. Monthly I commute 400 miles, and I can safely add 400 miles on the weekends on my road bike. I think what will make the difference is getting some early morning rides in during the week when the weather gets warmer. My family is all late to bed and late to rise, so I'll be extra happy to set a better example as sunrise gets earlier and warmer.
527 miles last month, and I'll probably just hit 700 miles this month. Still a ways to go, but everything is feeling good.

April 20:
I wiped out at RR crossing and broke the top of my femur (thigh bone). Much pain. I just now got home from the hospital where they put four pins into the knuckle (part of bone which fits into the hip socket) together with the rest of my leg.
Surgery went quick and well. Recovered to go home in 24 hrs from surgery. Now I must be careful. 2-3 weeks only light weight on leg. I will need 6 weeks total recovery with Physical Therapy like stationary cycling with a recliner type.
There is some risk: Bone can die w/in 1 year. If this happens, I will need a replacement. But the Dr said my bone looked good; I should be OK

After 12 full weeks on crutches, I have finally begun to ride my bike again.
This month I put in 125 to 150 miles of actual cycling & an equal amount of miles on the trainer. So, let's say 250 miles since 7/20/09.
BTW: I will be riding my trainer a lot for about a year.
The leg has healed nicely and is feeling good and strong. I think I will be OK in the long run, but I will be a while before I can begin riding 1000 miles per month.
For now, I will be working myself back up to 500 miles/month. Hopefully you will see me back here early next year.
