Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Your Raleigh One Way

The Raleigh One Way is an instant classic; my fixed, winter touring bike. With Brooks saddle, full fenders, leather bar tape and cork plugs it starts out pretty complete. I'm keeping the standard 35c tires for the winter and added a B&M Ixon IQ headlight http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/headlights.aspand Planet Bike blinkyhttp://ecom1.planetbike.com/3034.html. I replaced the stock cage pedals for Shimano 105s.

What have you done? I'm looking for an appropriate tool kit saddlebag for tool kithttp://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?sort=branddesc&id=1794, spare tube, CO2 and patch kit. I also need a couple ofbottle cages; 10F tomorrow so I'll need thermal bottles.

I'm leaning toward the 2 strap Acorn roll bag or Brooks Challenge (a bit pricier). I do like the sites that show what fits in and make practical comments about "thigh rub".

The Millbrook does look big. It does remind me of the bag I had on my 3 speed.

They do still make the Volpe. Luckily this year its back to a decent color/design. Last year it was a pretty gaudy gold with too many stickers. Blue is pretty nice.

The TR3 is similar to the One Way? A bit heavy compared to carbon and aluminum bikes and unibody cars. gets up to a pretty good speed but not super quick. Handles very well, longer wheel base, real leather and certainly no fancy low profile tires. The engine is a little worn, could use a tune up and balance the carbs. Seat, saddle, bottom is very much pre-conditioned and broken in......, A little rusty and steering is a bit loose but properly lubricated I (we, the car, bike and me) can travel plenty of miles.

I thought that was standard on old English cars? It is also a nice simple car even if it is powered by a tractor engine. (I know, I know,the Ferguson engine is not the same as the modified Vanguard lump used in the TRs). I do like the TR2 & 3 triumphs, especially in BRG.

When I got to the engine I morphed myself with the '3, especially relative to lubrication.....
I confess I too am a fan of Harry of the 3 point hitch. I've a gray (not BRG ) Ferguson tractor waiting for Spring time refurb.

Thanks for finding it. Bianchi's website is a bit confusing and I missed it. I remember seeing that green one at the LBS; very nice bike for the price.

How do you find your third water bottle on the front of the down tube; seems prone to road dirt but maybe fender protection is adequate? Front tire clearance is enough for convenient bottle access?

Your guidance re bags is much appreciated. How did you find this One Way thread? Do you ride singlespeed in NZ? Your Volpe looks well suited for touring in NZ although my views are overly biased by my very fond recollection of rolling, steep hills north of Auckland.

The extra 500ml is welcome on tours and warmer days, two bottles often isn't enough and sometimes its a long way between faucets. I had trouble finding a cage that would hold the third bottle low enough and even then it wont take a regular bottle due to wheel clearance, needs a small stubby one. I decant into the other bottles so dirt/tar/cow/sheep dung isn't such a worry.

I don't have the bianchi anymore but I use a behind the saddle dual bottle holder on my new trek so if its not too hot I can do 100 miles without stopping. But it means no millbrook so on short tours its camelbak or stop lots. Yeah the volpe was a good all rounder, commuting/touring/light MTB/ and comfy enough to ride all day and night. Took me around fiji even. Been replaced with three bikes :D

The millbrook has a seatpost buckle so its held firm and doesn't wobble/bounce. Combined with a bar bag its a nice solution for a small amount of luggage, street clothes, tools, spares, and toiletries. The pic above was during a 2 day 360km tour, last feb I did a 3 day 500km trip (rode to a century, rode home) on my trek with the same bag.

I was lusting after a One Way last year, but I'm pretty happy with my new Swedish Nishiki singlespeed (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=7566045&postcount=3669) which gets me to work and back.

Nice new Nishiki! Coaster brake, chain guard and handsome look. By the way, I enjoyed learning about your adventures in lights.

Brandy new One Way almost drove me to brandy. Wheels are flexing, creaking and warping to require en route truing in 0 C temps while standing in snow. Brake adjustment necessitated by re-tightening the chain. Temporary saddlebag has no blinky loop and covers the new bike reflector. Rooted around in the depths for a 35c spare tube for a tool kit. Finally cast off after a false start sans booties.

Man! it is a heavy, smooth ride. I love the British BRG-Brooks theme. I'm also a fan of the 1947 Buick Roadmaster and One-Way with 35c tires shares some comfy, ain't-gonna-stop-real-fast-so-you-better-think-ahead characteristics. I rode an extra 10 miles just because with all that momentum and a nice sunset how could I stop?

Folks I went with a Brooks Challenge tool bag. It is just big enough for tube, tools and patches for my one day rides. My blinkie mounts on the seat post. I'll put a Millbrook on my "Iwanna" list.
