Howdy all.

I'm another cycling freako.

I'm a loaded touring enthusiast from Buffalo; so much of an enthusiast that I took a home-job that allows me to work from remote locations just to "support my habit." (I do medical transcription as a private contractor). I can think of no better environment to work in than the middle of the woods somewhere. I am looking to move out of this area though, since it's not very bike-friendly weather for half the year. We'll see where I land.

Anyway, I've landed here for the time being. Nice to meet you.

Welcome! I went to SUNY Buffalo in the mid 70's. I used to commute by bike between the various campuses including Ridge Lea (where the geology department was housed at the time), at least from about April until November, when the snow made it impossible to ride anymore...I spent my summers bike touring w/ a full camping outfit around western NY. I also took a couple of bike trips to Geneva, NY. The last time I left Buffalo in 1977 I was on my bike - a rainy fall tour east to the Adirondacks, where I got stuck in my tent in the rain in the high country for what seemed like days...I finally hitched a ride out of there w/ my bike from some guys in a van...ah, the good ol' days... :)

randya, I'm a SUNYAB alum too, from the early '90s. Piano performance major though.
:) I've been stuck in the rain for days too...it can be miserable, but if you bring study material or something to create with (I always bring a sketchpad) it doesn't have to be too horrible. It's really only miserable for me when it doesn't let up or if my tent leaks. Otherwise, I'm actually a certifiable rain fanatic. I just can't get enough of that smell.

I've done a decent amount of loaded touring around here, and it's lovely once I'm out in the country, but getting to the country is sometimes scary considering all the suburban development that engulfs Buffalo proper in three directions. (There is always Canada, but passing through Peace Bridge customs on a loaded bike is kinda not worth it) It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't four miles and more of single lane roads with no shoulders and very testy drivers.

Once I'm out of that though, there are some great routes and some very nice people out there. I absolutely love people who are eager to let me camp out for a night on their property without me asking them.

I'm thinking of moving to Eugene, Oregon for a more seasonally hospitable cycling environment. We'll see. I'm saving right now for a Rivendell bicycle and a new laptop, and after those expenses, it's time to decide where to go and then save for the big move.
