Happy New Year everybody,

I've been a member for a few months and have learned TONS from your help on this forum. Thank you!

2009 goal. I'm 340 now. Want to get under 300.

I want to ride more but my poor Schwinn Suburban with the 33 year old gumwall tires does not want to carry my weight. At my current weight, It is just not comfortable for me to ride.

I want to balance ease of riding and yet still get a good workout.

Does one get the same workout on a recumbent that one would get on a "cruiser" style bike.

I am considering the TREK Navigator 3.0 or a RANS recumbent. The rans looks really nice.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

That Navigator looks like a dreadful bike. For the same money you could get a Trek 4300 mountain bike. That would be my advice. Happy new year!

A non-suspension MTB would be my choice although you could put a bit of work into your Schwinn and (assuming it is the right size) have a very capable bke. The 'bent will give you a good workout as well if you find that more to your liking.

I'd get the best bike or bent you can afford and then purchase a heart monitor so that when you ride you can make sure your heart rate is up enough to build cardiovascular strength. I remember a post a couple months ago where someone mentioned that when riding a bent it was easy to get to the point where you were moving fast but not really exerting yourself in a manner that will help with your weight lose goal.

Anyway, that's my two cents.
